Year 7 Indigenous Author Visit Term 2 - Boori Monty Pryor

Year 7 and teachers were extremely privileged to experience the legendary storyteller Boori Monty Pryor who invited us to travel with him and our First Nations’ people from the first footsteps through 80,000+ years of strength, sickness, and immense possibility through the medium of his new book ‘Story Doctors’. We were his inaugural audience to experience his unique telling of this special book since its publication, and having Boori’s visit so close to

the National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC) week from

4 - 11 July, made this visit all the more poignant for reflection by the students.

From the very first stories and art, to dance, language, and connection with the land, Boori offered a powerful, beautiful, and deeply rich account of Australia's true history, drawing on a lifetime of wisdom, and on his generous instinct to teach and heal.

Here are the reactions from students, invoked by Boori’s storytelling of Story Doctors:

“Like a poem, it is an easy way to make people understand to take care of our land and to respect it”

 - Luke

“I like how the words have little meanings and the pictures have more than what meets the eye”

 - Rosie

"I liked how the pictures weren't just there for the sake of the words, but had a deeper meaning that explained the story more"

 - Alisha

“I like that an Aboriginal person like Boori was able to become an author; and that he is able to get so many different points across to so many people”

“Yesterday was the day when an inspirational Aboriginal author came to visit our school and his name was Boori Monty Pryor and he showed us his sensational new book called Story Doctors. It was an unforgettable experience. The illustrations were created by Rita Sinclair. The illustrations were magical and each illustration had an unbelievable message behind it such as the native kangaroo and the sheep. The message was that a native animal knows not to put his feet in the water while drinking water. While a Sheep is a non-native animal that puts its feet in the water while drinking. He also played the didgeridoo which was phenomenal but it was very very loud. This was an amazing experience to spend time and Listen to Boori Monty Pryor. And I hope to see him again any time soon”

  - Deep Armaan

“I really liked how much enthusiasm Boori had; he had a lot of character and the book has a lot of different meanings for all ages which I think is an incredible way to write a story book”

 - Isaac

“I liked how he made the words rhyme, it takes a lot of work to get meaning into rhyming words”

 - Rudra

“I loved the book very much and I told Monty that on the day. It made me think about my perspective on the world”

 - Jai
