Our Debaters

An Online Debate

Debating update

Round 3 of the DAV competition was cancelled and the adjudicators offered to run a practice debate online. I asked the students and Alana Wineberg really wanted to do the practice debate due to the work she had put into her speech so it was great to see her enthusiasm and to see debating to continue to expand outside the SEAL program.  Alana and Talia Atar did their first debate (Talia for the year and Alana- ever!) and they did such a great job. Jake Chen is in the other team and had a speech prepared so he presented with them in their practice debate against Mill Park.

It was great to see their passion and they represented the school with pride. It is no easy feat to do a debate, let alone change to an online debate at the last minute. Jake provided a lot of resources and support to the new debaters, as did Julia and Soha, Anisa and some 7D students as researchers.

Our debating captains, Soha in 7B and Julia in 8D, have done a lot of work and shown amazing leadership through their running of online workshops with Reservoir Views,

Preston Primary School and Preston North East Primary. This is another thing that has had to change last minute and the students have has risen to the challenge- converting a 2 period workshop into a 30 minute online workshop. Selinna, Anisa and Soha have also helped the teaching staff create resources to help the primary school teachers prepare their students for the competition. Thanks to Penelope Keaughran for all her help giving feedback to the students and planning introductory fun activities with the new debaters.
