It is a busy time in the Careers department. I am currently running career interviews focused on subject selection with Year 10 and 11 students and from early August will be assisting Year 12 students with their university applications.
When selecting VCE subjects it is important students remember the following factors:
Year 12 students will be able to complete their university/TAFE applications through VTAC (Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre) as of 2 August 2021. Students have an allocated meeting time with me to complete their application. They have also attended an information session where I highlighted what is involved in the application process and advised students to try and have 6–8 courses of interest in priority order for this meeting. This will assist with the process.
I also explained the process of applying for SEAS (Special Entry Access Scheme). SEAS adjusts a student’s ATAR in recognition of circumstances that may have affected their education. This gives them a better chance of getting an offer for the course they want. It includes financial disadvantage, medical issues and difficult circumstances. Students will be guided on applying for this if they are eligible.
I will be advertising some parent information sessions run through VTAC in the near future. I would highly recommend attending these, as they give a very clear insight into the process.
Our next Career Conversations event will take place on Tuesday 10 August, 3.30–5pm. We are hoping this will take place on site but if this is not possible we will record the session as we did with our second event. This event will focus on careers that involve coordination and information, with speakers in areas including Law, Commerce, Education and Marketing. Deakin University will also be in attendance to provide information on their University and answer any questions. I strongly recommend students attend to find out more about these careers. Even if they think they are not of interest, it is a good way to learn more about them first-hand before ruling them out. We ask students to register for this session.
