Sport News

Mr Luke Caplick

Welcome back to all for what will be another busy term of sport. It is only Week 1 and already we have many sporting opportunities on offer for all students from Years 5-12.

AIC Tennis, Track and Field, Basketball and Rugby League training for all teams from Year 5-12 has now commenced.

In my opinion, to boost or better a school’s sports program we must firstly look at ‘School Spirit’. I feel fortunate that I am involved in a community where many people exhibit enormous amounts of school spirit. Our boys show spirit through participation, enjoyment and support of their mates and the College. May I please ask parents to assist the College in its quest to further develop school spirit by strongly encouraging your boy/s to get involved and to support others when asked.

Over the coming weeks, coaches and teachers will be personally asking some of our talented student-athletes to join the AIC Track and Field training program. There is no doubt that our College community gives greatly to each of its students. From time to time, I believe, it’s a fair request that the College asks something in return. If a student is good enough and talented enough to represent his College – then he should. It would be a great shame to see our best athletes, musicians or perhaps academic students not use their gifts to benefit the College and to better themselves. We understand the need for a balanced education and we do not want to over-burden our students, but we want Marist’s best to shine. If there are issues surrounding a student’s workload which impedes him from participating, please contact the Sports Office on sports@marash.qld.edu.au

The Sports Office and coordinators are reasonable in their approach when working with families and students to come up with solutions and alternative programs which is beneficial for all. Again, I urge all students and parents to support this process. If you have a gift, please use it to benefit others.

Coordinators for Term 3 Sports

For all enquiries pertaining to these sports please contact the respective coordinator.

This week and weekend we have a number of sporting trials occurring against other AIC schools. All details can be found on the College app. This will be a further opportunity for coaches to assess players and adjust teams. I would expect some movement of players between teams in readiness for next weekend’s Round 1 fixtures v St Laurence’s College. Coaches are instructed to choose their teams each week based on attendance, player performance and attitude.

As always, I urge all students to get involved in the sports program and enjoy the challenges you face along the way. Enjoy the term ahead boys!

Confraternity Carnival

Over the holidays we competed at the Confraternity Rugby League Carnival, which was unfortunately cut short due to the 3-day lockdown imposed by the Queensland Government. It meant our boys only played their 3 pool games against Shalom College Bundaberg, St Augustine’s College Cairns and Ignatius Park Townsville. The first game against Shalom was our first game together as a team and the boys played well considering their limited preparation, winning 32-4. That set our afternoon matchup against an experienced St Augustine’s Cairns outfit where we started strongly but were eventually outplayed losing 24-16. It was just a few pushed passes that cost us victory. Our final pool game was against carnival favourites and rugby league powerhouse Ignatius Park, Townsville. Our boys started the game on fire shooting to a 14-0 lead after 10 minutes, playing some excellent rugby league. As fatigue came into the game, Ignatius Park’s rugby league experience came to the fore and they ended up running out convincing winners; however, it proved to our boys we can match it with the best schools when we are playing the type of game that coach Treleaven and Apps have instilled. At the conclusion of this game, the announcement was made that the carnival would conclude due to the COVID lockdown.

I would like to acknowledge Domain Serviced Apartments, 110 Racecourse Road, Ascot, who refunded two nights’ accommodation for us, which was a lovely gesture to help our parents recap some of their funds lost by the lockdown. We highly recommend Domain Serviced Apartments if you are looking for an excellent place to stay in future.

As you can see from the promotional video below that was shown at the Confraternity Carnival opening ceremony, it was a highly anticipated week that we were all looking forward to. Do yourself a favour and watch the video below which is narrated by the legendary rugby league commentator Ray ‘Rabbits’ Warren:

Tennis

Welcome back to all those students who have been away on holiday. Congratulations boys on a fantastic turnout for the first morning of training today. Great to see.

With the final week of training before we officially kick off our season, we cannot emphasise the importance to turn up to your scheduled training sessions. It is very pleasing for me to see the improvement in a lot of students over the last month.

Just a quick reminder that the 1st IV will be playing a trial match this afternoon against Villanova College from 4:00pm so if you would like to come to cheer the boys on and you are in the area that would be awesome and I know the team would love your support.

See you on the courts.

AIC Tennis, Rugby League and Basketball

All Year 5-6 basketball games are played on Friday afternoons. All Year 7-12 basketball and Year 5 -12 tennis and rugby league games are played on Saturday.  Please go to the College’s app to view all times and venues throughout the season.

AIC Tennis, Rugby League and Basketball Uniform

Any student who represents the College in AIC Tennis, Rugby League and Basketball must wear the full and correct College uniform. Students who are not dressed correctly will not be permitted to take to the court or field. Uniform standards will be kept and maintained at a high level. The College requires the support of the parent body to ensure these standards are met.
