Science

Dear Parents,

We have had a great start to Term 4 in Science. Some of the students have been working on a Science Passion Project about a question they wanted to research related to Science and will be presenting their research to their peers.

In class we have been conducting some experiments such as making ice cream and stacking liquids and have also had the opportunity to send a burning question to a scientist at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute. This has been very exciting for our students to have received a reply to their burning question about anything related to Science.

Following is the link to some of the answers to their questions and also a little about the Scientist who answered their questions.  Each Wednesday more answers will be added to the link.

Once you are on the following site go to the tab “YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED”.

Earlier this week the students in Year Prep to Year 6 engaged in an online Chemical Sciences Show via Zoom, exploring chemical reactions and physical changes. It was a great experience and all the students from Prep to Year 6 absolutely loved the Chemistry Sciences Shows. The presenters included lots of additional and very  interesting  information while engaging  the students in some fabulous experiments.

Some reflections about our Chemical Sciences Incursion:

On the 17th of November we had a science incursion with a scientist Ben Zagami via Zoom from Fizzics Education. He was a chemical scientist. He showed us how things reacted and what happened when different chemicals mixed together. He explained that the scientists in the early days, alchemists, wanted to make a liquid that could turn things into gold and a liquid that could turn you immortal. Ben explained how the thought of scientists has progressed.

There were many fascinating experiments that the scientist showed us. Some of the highlights were how the chemicals reacted really fast when getting mixed together and turned into different colours. He talked to us about acids and bases and how they mix together and how you test if a substance is an acid or a base by changes in colour. Ben told us that if you put a dirty gold coin in an acid overnight such as lemon juice it will be clean and most likely shiny by morning. He talked to us about making elephant toothpaste and he did an experiment and he said the result was like stepping on a tube of an elephant's toothpaste.

Kai

This was so much fun! I learnt about all of the different oxygens and other chemicals. Russel was really entertaining. I loved everything about it! My favourite thing was the elephant toothpaste experiment.

Nancy

I really liked the experiments that we watched and I hope we can have Fizzics Education again. I loved looking at all the science chemicals.

Leek

I enjoyed watching the reactions that the chemicals made because they were related to what I am investigating in my Science Passion Project.

Melina

I liked the way Ben explained the alchemists’ perspective around science.

Amelia J

I really enjoyed the incursion because it answered some of my wonderings related to my science Passion Project.

Andy Q

At the science incursion I learnt how to pop a balloon.

Ha

I learnt that when scientists add materials it makes a change.

Sophie

The scientist made a balloon pop.

 Lily

I learnt about liquid nitrogen. When you put a battery inside liquid nitrogen the light turns off, you need to wait and it will turn back on.

Serena

I learnt that when you put a metal ring in liquid nitrogen it becomes smaller.

Anthony

I learnt that science sometimes uses fire to do an experiment.
