Stage of the Week

Stage 2 - Years 3 and 4

What's been happening in 3/4P?

This year in 3/4P we have been learning about a range of different artists. At the end of last term, we looked at Pablo Picasso. We learnt that, while he was most famous for his paintings, he had many creative pursuits, including sculpture and poetry. We used his quirky style and use of bright colour to create Picasso-inspired statues.

More recently we have been studying Rene Magrittè. His surrealist style fascinated us, especially the unusual way he uses scale. Inspired by his artwork ‘Personal Values’, we created surreal living room scenes in which we made smaller objects larger.

In other news, we have been making leaps and bounds with our writing. We have been learning the process of drafting, editing and publishing our work. Here is our writing display wall! We have been writing some information texts. Soon we will be displaying our poetry.

Design a playground - 3BD

Many students in Year 3 B/D look forward to the assembly each Monday to see another piece of our brand new playground plan revealed. Each playtime our students watch dirt being scooped away, materials brought in, big trucks coming in and out as further progress is made on our playground area. All this has sparked our interest in developing playgrounds ourselves. You would not believe the creativity, imagination but also the skills in engineering and design, of the students and parents in 3B/D. For homework this week, we developed more than 20 playground models. Thank you parents for your love, care, support and partnership in creating these amazing models. You sure know how to use a glue gun!

Our Mob, God's Story

Year 3 B/D has studied the book 'Our Mob, God’s Story' over recent weeks. This is an art book with a difference, with more than 115 works by over 65 established and emerging Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists. These artists, all from different communities across the country, are sharing their faith in over one hundred paintings inspired by Bible verses and stories. As a class, we chose 2 of these paintings as our inspiration. Each of our students created their own personal artwork, inspired by the ancestors of our land. Attached you will find the great result of their creativity and hard work.

3D Constructions

In our study of 3D shapes, students demonstrated great cutting and sticking skills to create 3D shapes from nets.  This way, we could note the number of faces, edges and vertices on each shape. This was something students chose to do and they worked independently or in teams to decorate and combine shapes to build castles.

Here are a couple of samples.

4B - Aboriginal Art - Didgeridoos

Terms 3 and 4 History topics focussed on the way Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people lived before and after European contact.  We have studied the way the Aboriginal people used the land and adapted to the environment around them.  We looked at images of Aboriginal Art and used these to inspire our own artworks.  We had fun deciding on colour combinations and line and dot patterns. We used cardboard laminating rolls to wrap our pictures around and together, we think they make quite a striking display.
