ST SIMON YEAR 5 AND 6 SPORTS DAY

Due to the absence of Inter School Sport for our Year 5’s and Year 6’s, St Simon’s wished to offer the opportunity to participate in a skill based sports competitions. The selected games and teams reflected the Inter School sports that the students would have taken part in this year: soccer, netball, cricket, hot shots tennis, volleyball and fully loaded tee ball.

Here are a few reflections from Year 5 students about their experience.

"Tee-ball was really fun! It taught me to learn more about teamwork. It also taught me to be more patient and I really enjoyed the day!" - Ryan, 5 Blue

"Tee-ball was really exciting! I liked the teamwork and the learning about the different rules" - Rebecca, 5 Green

"I liked Netball a lot! It's lots of fun and I was able to play with so many different people in the team and in new positions" - Calvin, 5 Red

"We learnt about the rules of Volleyball and how to serve! We also learnt how to serve over the net without breaking the rules and how to 'dig.' It was really fun!" - Brady, 5 Red

"Soccer day was fun! I and, I'm sure a lot of others, learnt something new over the two days!" - Tino, 5 Blue

Here are a few reflections from Year 6 students about their experience.

“On Sports day, a teacher and some students were preparing for Sports day. At the start, the teachers were giving Instructions of what to do and the rules. But some people made the game funny by missing the tee twice and then hitting it like a centimetre. It was pretty funny. The teams were Bats, Renegades, Stars and Sixers, and everyone enjoyed it very much. Then we decided to put the teams together so it would be bigger. It was very fun and good to be on the bowling team because it was hard to get runs because the whole field was covered but it was still amazing. Each team had great players so it was a fantastic experience to see all those good players. It was a great 2 days to have great fun with different classes.

Tennis for me was a great and enjoyable experience. I personally enjoyed playing tennis as I am currently playing tennis as my sport but I think everyone got a good chance to see what tennis is all about and actually have fun. I think people who played tennis as their winter sport (whether they be people who play tennis or people who don’t), all had a good chance to have a hit and have a great day with their doubles partner and versing other opponents and overall, just having good fun.

I personally love that there were two different teams as it gave us a competitive feel and that is hard to get through these tough times with COVID-19. We were split into teams, team Nadal and team Federer. I was on team Federer. As we were doing doubles, Each person only got two serves and then swapped. As for the scoring system, it was counted by who had the most points at the end of the match. We also had eight minutes for each game and it got quite intense. The first day of winter sports, team Federer won but the second and final day, team Nadal won. Although we did get that competitive feel, it also gave us the feeling of joy and everything is for fun as winter sports were held at school.

All in all, No matter who is good or not great at tennis, I think it was an engaging experience for everyone and overall, we had a fun-filled and enjoyable day!

Gabriel D’Souza (Art Leader)

For soccer in year 6 there were two teams, Superstars and Allstars with a wide range of abilities between the two teams. We did drills in the two sessions such as zig zagging a soccer ball between cones and kicking for goals while also having the chance to be goalie. We learnt these skills by our Coach/Referee Mrs Hannett who taught us lots of the new skills and kept the game fair.

Over the two Fridays of Soccer we played two proper matches concluding with the All stars winning both matches. Game one was 6-2 all stars winning. Game two was 6-2 the Allstars winning. During these sessions of Soccer some of the fun memories were some of the players who have never played soccer scoring their first goals especially the girls who got more involved throughout the 2 days.

Another special moment was when there was some fabulous stops from the goallies that stopped the other teams goal especially at the end when the scores were close. These two days were enjoyable days of learning new skills about the overall sport of Soccer and experiencing new things while having fun and keeping fit at the same time.

I was in Volleyball and part of the Nets team. The teacher who was our supervisor and referee was Miss Phelan. Miss Phelan was very good at keeping the game in order, scoring and explaining the rules. The first week of the competition, we practised our skills and prepared ourselves for next week. We practised passing and hitting the ball to each other. We have played volleyball for sport at school, so everyone already knew a little bit about the game. I was confident in our team for the championship the following week.

Fast forward to next week. There were 4 different teams - the nets, the waves, the beaches and the sands. We split the championships into two parts. Before lunch, 2 games were played between the teams, with the winner of each game progressing to the grand final after lunch. The other 2 teams played off for 3rd and 4th. My first game, I versed the Sands. The game was very thrilling and close but we won only by a few points. I was very proud of my team and the sands for trying their best. After lunch, as the Nets won, we played against the Beaches in the grand final. I knew the beaches were a very skilled team, so we had to try our best and with a lot of determination, our team won. We were very proud of each other and couldn’t believe that we won. I think that the Inter-House Championship was a very good idea considering what has happened this year and we were very grateful that we have the equipment to hold a competition like this.
