Principal's Report

by David Lord

This week has two significant public events that resonate strongly with our Staughton community.

NAIDOC WEEK

For the whole week people around Australia will celebrate NAIDOC Week. This week celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander peoples. This year the theme of the week is: Always Was, Always Will Be. This theme is an acknowledgement that this nations story didn’t begin with documented European contact; that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years and are spiritually and culturally connected to this country.

VCAL students have recently been involved in acknowledging and celebrating the original inhabitants of our land by making Aboriginal theme based murals that have involved learning about aboriginal culture and understanding Aboriginal design and art concepts.

Remembrance Day

Remembrance Day, on November 11, commemorates the end of World War 1 ‘The War to End all Wars’. Over the past century, this moment has been adopted across the globe as a time to remember those who served and sacrificed in all wars and conflicts. We support RSL Victoria in asking our community to ‘Remember to Remember’ – to commit to pausing for just one minute to remember those who gave their lives in service to their country, those who returned home injured or ill, and those who bravely serve our country today.

We, at Staughton College, would like to show our respect and acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land on which our school is situated, of elders past and present. We extend a warm welcome to everyone who visits our school.
