Mid March, 14 Year 10 girls rowed on the Barwon River in the Head of School Girls Regatta. After coming last in the heats, both the div 3 girls and the div 1-2 girls in the 8, needed to win the repechages to make the ‘A final’. Both crews were over a length down at the halfway mark of their repechages but powered home and rowed over the rest of the crews to win and therefore make their way to the A final.
The Year 10 div 3 girls rowed a 6 second personal best time to win silver in the final and the div 1-2 in the 8 boat also did a personal best by .7 of a second to win a bronze medal.
The div 3 girls beat the likes of Geelong Grammar, Carey Grammar, Caulfield Grammar, Haileybury and Wesley Colleges. Crew members were Audrey English, Marley Manford, Eliza Wray, Ruby Frdelja, and cox Wheng Marbella.
The div 1-2 girls beat MLC Kew, Geelong College, Wesley College, Caulfield Grammar and Carey Grammar. Crew members were Lilly Webb, Hayley Carnes, Keeley Abbott, Stella Edmonston, Issy Ross, Mackenzie Kopke-Veldhuis, Amaylie Coutts, Allira May, and cox Mykayla Scanlan.
Fifty schools were rowing at this regatta so for Ballarat High School to finish19th on the medal tally with only 2 crews competing, was an amazing effort by the girls and a great way to finish the off the 2021/22 season.
Congratulations girls!!
