Junior School Final Assembly for Term 1

A Tribute to Grandparents

I’ve always associated the Easter holidays with family connection time. Every family connects in their own way, perhaps it’s through a shared meal, festivity or special occasion, but I imagine one common element features prominently across many families – grandparents.

The official Grandparents’ Day in Australia is Sunday 30 October, but for a Junior School community the final day of Term One is an ideal time to pay tribute to grandparents as we can share our learning from the term then enjoy a wonderful Easter together.

I’m sure I don’t need to advocate the immense value of grandparents in our young people’s lives. We know how dearly grandparents are adored by their grandchildren, with a unique connection that seems to be only fully understood between grandparents and grandchildren, but parents truly appreciate it all the same.

The value of grandparents is universal it seems, honoured by a special title across all cultures, here is just a sample of a very long list that is worth searching at some point with your children for their interest.

Grandmother

‘Nonna’ - Italian

‘Obaasan’ - Japanese

‘Oma’ – German and Dutch

‘Bibi’ - African

‘Yiayia’ - Greek

‘Nai Nai’ - Chinese

Grandfather

‘Nanaji’ - Hindi

‘Lolo’ - Filipino

‘Morfar’ - Swedish

‘Grand-père’ - French

‘Tutu kane’ - Hawaiian

‘Abuelo’ - Spanish

Thank you to all the grandparents in our community. The value you offer in your family cannot be understated. You connect the past (your children) with the present (your grandchildren) and shape the future (the adults your grandchildren will become) through the experiences you share with them today. These are lasting memories children cherish into their adulthood, enjoy!

P&F Colour Run

What a tremendous blast of colour this event was, and fun! Students from across the school took to the colour course with confidence, enjoying every skip, jump, jog, roll, walk and bounce through the obstacles. Funds raised will support the Albany Youth Association and Ronald McDonald House with the invaluable work they do in our community.

Easter Hat Parade

This highly anticipated event of the year was again a crowd favourite in the ECC. Whilst we weren’t able to assemble together in one space with our gallery of families cheering us on, spirits were still high and Easter Bonnets brilliantly captured on film as classes paraded through the ECC instead. Families will be able to view the full parade via the Virtual Assembly on Friday at 2.00pm which can be accessed through the MyGSG link below. This is a pre-recorded assembly that families will be able to view from the link when a time that is convenient for them.

Inquiry culminations

Congratulations to all cohorts for your efforts in exploring the inquiry units in your classes this term. The learnings across the Junior School have been fascinating and your enthusiasm for applying new knowledge and skills into projects or actions has been a joy to see. Truly, well done. It will be exciting to see where your inquiries take you in the terms ahead.

Thank you again for a wonderful start to 2022. Enjoy a restful and safe Easter break.

With warmest regards, and appreciation,

Mr Ken Raven | Head of Junior School
