From the Chaplain

The Junior School classes have been looking at the Easter story. Pre-Primary and Year One have coloured in some Easter themed pictures, Year Two have made some cross-sunset pictures, Year Five created some egg pictures for the Easter Service and learnt about the different colours representing Easter.

The Year Five students also worked in groups and read over parts of the Easter story from the Bible. They had some questions to think about after reading the passage.  Here are some of their answers:

Q. What two strange things happened in the passage?

A. It went dark for a long time and a curtain went in half.  Right after Jesus died the world went black for 3 hours and the curtain at the temple tore in half.  This 9cm thick curtain tore from top to bottom, to show that from Christ’s death, we now have freedom to come to God.  Both of these events show a visible display of the power of God.

Q. Why do you think the soldier decided Jesus was the Son of God?

A. He remembered that he didn’t do anything wrong and saw him do good things.

One solder said, ‘Truly, this is the Son of God.’ This man would have seen loads of crucifixions, but he realised that this was no ordinary man that was put to death. With all the circumstances surrounding the event, he could see that this man truly was the Messiah.

Q. Why do you think Jesus didn’t save himself?

A. Because he did his thing and wanted to save our sins. Of course, Jesus could have saved himself, as he is God.  But he chose to die for you and me so that we could be forgiven of our sins and be made right with God.

Q. What does verse 43 mean? (Jesus said, ‘I promise you, today you will be with me in paradise.’)

A. We think it means that Jesus will be with your forever.  One man on the cross said, ‘Jesus remember me when you come into your kingdom.’  He believed that Jesus was who he said he was.  Jesus was the ultimate sacrifice, as a sinless man.  Jesus broke the curse of death forever so ‘that anyone who believes in him may not die but have eternal life,’ John 3:16.
