From the 5/6 Classroom

Grade 5 News

The Grade 5 team have had a great start to the term.  While the grade 6’s were on camp, we made the most of our time by preparing for our upcoming NAPLAN exams, practising some winter sports and getting reacquainted with our classrooms, friends and teachers.

For our NAPLAN practise, we used some of the example tests that can be found on the ACARA website https://www.nap.edu.au/naplan.  If you have any questions or concerns about the tests, this website is sure to have the answers!

Just like when we did our online practise test last term, we set up our classrooms and went through the protocols of what a testing environment should look, sound and feel like.  We set timers to match the length of the tests as we will do them on testing day, and off we went!  Having this time to practise and prepare was a positive experience for the students, and we are feeling much more confident about facing the real NAPLAN now.

During our Maths lessons, we started exploring data collection and representation.  Because we are clever, we linked this skill with our Integrated unit of Museums in Motion and studied data that was related to the First Fleet convicts.

We were all shocked to learn that the youngest convict (John Hudson) was convicted of his crime at aged 9 and sent on the First Fleet at the age of 13!  We are very glad that things are different now.

For our Maths activity, we combined the use of ICT and good old pencil and paper to represent our data. We also used our iPads to do further research into the First Fleet so that the data would be made more meaningful to us than just some numbers and letters on a page.

During sports time, we had a go at netball, softball or hockey.  Our 5/6 Interschool Sports are resuming soon, and we will have tryouts for netball, softball, soccer and Aussie Rules.  Those who are interested will be learning all about hockey with Mr. King during the week. Autumn and Winter weather won’t stop us from having fun!
