Grade 1/2 News

Grade 1 and 2 Reminders:

Term 1 in Review...

The grade 1 and 2 students have all made a wonderful start to the 2022 school year, it's hard to believe we have reached the end of term 1 already! We have learnt so many new things in class and have been lucky enough to participate in lots of other events too, including:

  • Start Up Performance
  • Interview with Winter Olympian Alex Ferlazzo
  • Guest speaker, Emma Clohesy for our Topic - Places and Spaces
  • Harmony Day
  • ANZAC Day - we were very lucky to have Darby's dad, Joel, to share his knowledge and experience with us and join us for some ANZAC activities.
  • Crazy Hair Day

Finishing with some of our favourite events for the year the Easter Hat Parade & Raffle and Cross Country!

Upcoming Fortnight:

Term 2 - Week 1 and 2

Literacy:  In week 1 we will focus on monitoring our reading to ensure that it makes sense and when we 'go wrong' we will use fixing up strategies to correct our mistakes. We will be learning about the phonemes Gg - giggling girls and Oo - on the orange. The following week we will move onto using text features to support our understandings and students will focus on the phonemes Ll - lizards like lollipops and Uu- umbrellas up. Throughout the two weeks we will focus on the following heart words (which students need to be able to read and write by heart): today, birthday, be, sees, happy, sky, like, so, go, hello, Zoo, do, put, puts, look, come, comes, love, shop, here, all, saw, out, now, down, with, then, said, elephant.

During writing sessions we will focus on persuasive texts, unpacking the structure, openers that support this text type and lots of practice persuading others to agree with our point of view! We will also continue to look at correct letter formation, pencil grip, punctuation, finger spacing etc!

Mathematics: In Mathematics students will be focusing on Addition and Chance. We will look at efficient mental strategies (e.g. counting on, Friends of 10) to use when completing addition problems. Students will be exploring Chance vocabulary for example likely, unlikely, certain, impossible etc. and then discussing the chances of events happening.

Topic: Tiptoe through our World

Students will learn how to reduce, reuse and recycle as they consider importance of sustainability.
