Our clever Preps have been learning about how to measure length. They have used the language of longer, shorter and the same when comparing the lengths of a range of objects. The students have enjoyed using informal units (such as blocks, counters and paperclips) to measure the lengths of objects in their classrooms. Have a look at some of our Preps measuring:

Another activity the Preps have been doing in Maths is called Number Talks. This is an activity that is completed from Years Prep to 6. In a Number Talk, children are asked to show or explain their thinking about a question. These Preps were asked to show what they knew about the number 7. Take a look at their great thinking!

Ideas for further learning at home

Parents of young children (Years Prep - 2) may like to have a go at some of these measuring activities at home.

Towers: Use blocks to build towers. Ask your child:

  • Who is taller? You or your tower?
  • Can you make a tower so tall you can't see over it?
  • Can you make your tower short enough so you can step over it?

Paths: Children make "paths" on the floor using books. Ask your child:

  • When you walk next to your path, how many feet long is it?
  • How long do you think the path to the bathroom / kitchen / loungeroom will be?
