French Model United Nations

On Monday July 23, a group of Year 11 and 12 students attended the Model United Nations in French which was held at Treasury Place in the city.

Two teams, involving students Jordan Khouri, Elizabeth Sahr, Sahar Kahn, Mobaraka Hussaini, Damien Dalais, and Samara Hart represented Lebanon and the United States in a debate on the treatment of refugees. They learned a lot from their experience and performed well in their roles as representatives of their respective countries.

The United States team were obviously not very popular with those representing war-torn countries, but Damien managed to give some entertaining responses.

French Week

Week 2 of the term was French Week. Students participated in a variety of competitions in the lead up to the week, but, as usual, the French Café was the highlight.

The café was run by the Year 9 French class, ably supported by the Year 10, 11 and 12 French students. Delicious croissants, crêpes and hot chocolates were provided to a crowd of hungry staff and students.

A staff-student pétanque match was also held on the Thursday of the week, and the staff were victorious.

MoMA Exhibition at the NGV

On Friday August 17, the Year 9, 10, 11, 12 French students were fortunate enough to experience the MOMA exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria, thanks to a benefactor who sponsored us. We were fortunate enough to be covered for transport, lunch, entry to the exhibition and a talk by one of the gallery’s curators. This visit was particularly helpful in preparing Year 12 students for their detailed study on their topic, La Belle Époque. Some also enjoyed the experience of ordering waffles in French from the owner of the Belgian waffle shop in Degraves St.

Matinèe du Français

On Sunday August 26, the French Teachers’ Association of Victoria held the Matinée du Français at the Melbourne Convention Centre at South Wharf. The morning is a preparation for the end-of-year French exam and covers all aspects of the exam (speaking, listening, reading and writing). We listened to one amazing student who got a study score of 50 for French in Year 10 (and no, he doesn’t have a French background) who gave the attending students a lot of useful suggestions.
