Reading: Students have been learning to visualise while reading, forming pictures in their minds to aid with comprehension.
Writing: We have been looking closely at key passages from mentor texts, identifying powerful words and examining the ways that authors present their writing for different purposes and audiences.
Maths: Students have been working with decimals, including adding, subtracting and multiplying. (This is a great area to help them practise at home, too - can you challenge your child to add up items from your shopping docket, for example? Or to calculate change at the checkout?)
Inquiry: Students are learning to gather, categorise and represent data using an Excel spreadsheet, and to generate charts and graphs to display their data.
Interschool Sports is now well underway. We've played two rounds so far, and currently we're ranking as follows (from 7 teams in total):
Girls Basketball: Equal 5th
Open Basketball: Equal 6th
Rugby Tag: 5th
Hot Shots Tennis: Equal 5th
We've only played two rounds while most teams have played three at this stage, so we're currently at a little bit of a disadvantage on the ladder!
As expected, our students have been setting an amazing example with their behaviour and sportsmanship.
This week Victoria Road will be visting our school. We look forward to another competitive challenge.
Our Year 5 students spent Thursday 4 March at Lilydale Heights College for their Discovery Day, which is aimed at helping our Year 5 students get a taste of high school life!
The acitivites were eye opening and exciting. Activities students participated in were making truffles in Home Economics, lava lamps in Science, lithograph-style prints in Art, bookmarks, quizzes and brain teasers in English/Maths, jamming in Music and various mini-games in PE. Students were treated to a game show that was full of energy and excitement. Lots of Mexican waves, school chants and cheers, as a number of our students took to the stage in a fierce competition of 'Battle of the Minds'. It was lots of fun!
