Principal's Report

“Look closely at the present you are constructing: it should look like the future you are dreaming.” - Alice Walker

The Stage 2 renders provide an excellent visual representation of the finished school buildings once Stage 2 is complete in 2022. Built Environs has been appointed as the builders and will begin the process of site preparation in the coming weeks. I will provide regular updates to our school community via the newsletter, as well as Compass.

Our Year 7 students head off to Camp Rawson this week. The camp experience at Year 7 is an important opportunity for students to make connections outside of the school environment with their peers and their teachers. We know that students will enjoy the week and come back with memories that last a lifetime.

I have begun providing school tours each Tuesday and Thursday with prospective students and parents. It is so exciting to be able to share our students’ learning experience. Our students are the best ambassadors of the college and what we have to offer for students in the local area.

Student Leadership

We are delighted to announce our student leaders for 2021. These young people are the voice of their peers and have committed to ensuring our college continues to excel. Join me in congratulating all of these students. We will be holding a leadership assembly next week. Details to be provided via Compass invite for parents of student leaders.

Neighbourhood Watch 3193-Mural Painting

Our students were invited to paint the mural on the containers that were being delivered to Cann River as part of the Bushfire Recovery Appeal.  The students raised over $1500 for the Bushfire Appeal in 2020 which was donated to the Cann River Bushfire Recovery Appeal.  Neighbourhood Watch 3193 led the way with the support of the extraordinary community to provide 2 containers worth of materials for the Cann River community. We are proud to support and represent our fellow Victorians who are still rebuilding their lives after the fires of 2020. Neighbourhood Watch put together a Thank You Community Event to send off the containers on Sunday February 28th.

Swimming Sports Success

This was the first whole school event for 2021. The weather and positive atmosphere made it a fantastic day at the Oakleigh Recreation Centre, with over 90% of students in attendance.  Many students participated on the day and we would certainly like to have many more in the pool in 2022. It was a fun day of house colours and the first swimming carnival for our Year 7 students. The fun events were the highlight for so many students with Classic Catches and swimming a lap for a house point attracting many participants.

Students travelling to and from school

Students are encouraged to walk and ride to school and many do just that. The safety of students travelling to and from school is very important. We want to remind students to ensure that they are riding safely with a helmet at all times. It is also important that riders are following road rules and being mindful of cars and pedestrians. Students walking should be sure to cross Balcombe and Reserve Road at safe crossings and avoid walking out from behind parked cars, as this is a safety risk. Parents dropping off or picking up should organise to meet their child away from the main entrances of the college to avoid traffic congestion; this includes the Reserve Road car park, the front of the college and along the no parking zone on Balcombe Road. There are also a greater number of students taking the 825 bus at the end of the school day. A reminder that if students take public transport they need to wear a mask under the current Covid rules. They need to have a valid Myki. We have been monitoring bus usage and will be intervening if students are not following the above expectations. As part of promoting a healthy lifestyle, we would recommend that students going 1 or 2 stops on the 825 should be walking. Thank you to the community and parents who support our efforts to keep students safe as they travel to and from school.
