Around the Grounds

Poverty Day

When the College's Poverty Day comes around, you can expect a number of things. Firstly, that students will come dressed in their best Op-Shop attire, where there is also a pop-up thrift shop that emerges to raise funds for the Compassion charity.  Secondly students will be scavenging for bottle tops to utilise as currency, then exchange the earnings they have found to purchase housing materials from the ruthless Mr van der Tang, who oversees the supply of boxes and wood required to make a slum dwelling.

The results of these activities is a spontanous shanty town that emerges on the front lawn, the bottle tops are crafted into artwork, students get to go home with recycled clothing purchases, and a real difference is made with the funds raised for charity.  Whilst the day is marked with fun, the tragic reality of the wider global experience of poverty is not missed.

Thanks Mr van der Tang for overseeing this event.  Your enthusiasm is contagious!

Primary Beach Carnival

Just over a week ago, the Year 1 to Year 3 students from both campuses hit the foreshore for their annual Beach Carnival.  With the iconic Busselton Jetty as the background, students were given the opportunity to challenge one another in a range of activities and games.

We love how so many parents come along to enjoy the day with us - and we are grateful for the staff and supporters who delivered a wonderful day in the great outdoors for our students.

Senior Secondary Ball

The Senior Secondary School Ball unfolded last Saturday Night, with the glitz and glamour evident. Abbey Beach Resort saw a flood of finely dressed young men and women from Year 11 and 12 entering in an array of vehicles. From classic cars, quad bikes, caravans and even the boot of a car, the method of delivery was impressive as always.

Thank you to Mr van der Tang, Mrs Black, and all involved in the set up and organisation of the night.  A night to remember.

Cadets Camp

Cadets Camp was a runaway success again - with teams of students experiencing the great outdoors whilst learning about leadership, teamwork and having fun.

Mrs Hago captured a few images of the Scavenger Hunt event, and Mrs Wright of other rotations the students encountered.  A great event that students anticipate year after year.

The Learning Pit

The Busselton Year 3 class have been learning about The Learning Pit - how it feels to learn, the fear of jumping in, the confusion of not knowing how to do it yet, perseverance, getting stuck, getting unstuck and then the small steps that help gain ground and climb out, sometimes with help from others. They made a big poster with their photos on it.

Year 6 Assembly

The theme was the Cornerstone 3 R's - respect, responsibility, relationship. The Year 6s wrote the script, directed, choreographed and assembled the 'backstage' (gazebo) all on their own!

Here's their report on their work:

Year 6 assembly!

The focus for our Year 6 Assembly was to teach the students about the Cornerstone 3 R’s: Relationship, Respect and Responsibility. It was a great success! Our class worked hard for hours - we wrote the script, directed the skit and planned and organised our own costumes and decor. This included a gazebo backstage area! We even had a fun interactive song with a slide show made by classmates. Because of COVID restrictions we had to move the assembly to the gym, which was challenging, but we managed to collaborate well enough to pull it off.

Time will Tell!

The Year 1 class recently was determining how to tell the time with a sundial.  They created their own version on the school oval, and were able to track the passage of time during the day.

Mrs Kuendig reported the following:

'Our Year One class looks at Earth and Space Science through a Biblical Lens.

Genesis 1:14-15 talks about, how on Day 4, God made the sun, moon, and stars to separate day from night and to mark seasons, days, and years. For the last three weeks, the class has been watching the moon change its appearance from home or through pictures. Yesterday however, they built a sundial out in the oval firsthand. Every 30 minutes, they recorded how the shadow of a stick moved, compared this to the "movement of the sun", and estimated where it might be in another 30 minutes time. We were very thankful for a bright blue sky with uninterrupted sun and an air-conditioned classroom 🙂. '

Well done!

Constable Care in Busselton

The Primary students participated in a visit from Constable Care last week. Years K-3 enjoyed a puppet show titled 'Fun Scary' which covers protective behaviours. Later in the day, Years 4-6 watched a drama titled 'Screen Name' which focused on online protective behaviours.

A big thanks to the Constable Care team for coming in to educate and entertain our kids!

Constable Care in Dunsborough

Constable Care also made it to Dunsborough, and students there were also presented with important information.  The Year 4 to 6 students had a focus on Online safety, and bike and road safety was the focus for the Pre-Primary to Year 3 students.
