Foundation/1
During this fortnight students have been learning about public art, specifically looking at how art is created and displayed to be enjoyed by an audience. As part of this unit, students examined 'Floralis Generica' in Buenos Aires, Argentina. This is a giant sculpture of a silver flower which was designed by Argentine architect Eduardo Catalano.
Students used this landmark as a stimulus to help spark their creativity when making a mixed-media print of flowers. Students watched a series of videos, observing how the flower opens and closes during various times of the day and night. They printed flowers using household items such as a fork, corks and skewers on black paper. The following week, students used their knowledge of collage to add leaves using different shades of green. This was then followed by students assisting me with framing their artwork in preparation for the Art Show.
Grade 2/3
Students in the 2/3 cohort have been learning about the Mexican Art form of 'Hojalata which literally translates to 'A sheet of tin'.
They have been drawing plans and then carefully adding twine to their page to create a low-relief image. Once they had done this, the students proceeded to add foil to their pieces and gently rub over the twine to reveal their image. Students were given the choice to use Poscas or Sharpies to colour in various sections.
Grade 4-6
The Grade 4-6's explored Huichol Yarn Art which is usually created by Indigenous Mexicans. Historically, shamans created these pieces to reflect their spiritual relationships with ancestors as well as being used as offerings to their gods.
Traditionally, these paintings were made by spreading beeswax on a board and carefully filling out sections using brightly coloured yarns into the wax. However, at school, the students have been using cardboard, wool and PVA to replicate the effect and make an image of their choosing using this technique.
Examples of student's artwork, please note that they are still in the process of completing these pieces.
