Around the Junior School

Year 2 Contextual Learning

During the final few weeks of Term 2, Year 2 enjoyed being out in the community to link our learning to everyday life.

Two key activities we engaged in was our field trip to Suma Park Dam Water Facility and Ploughman’s Wetlands and also our work with Eat Up!

The water tour of Orange linked with our science learning on the Water Cycle and our work with Eat Up! was making sandwiches to help students within our community who may arrive at school without food. This activity linked with our work in English on procedural texts and we thank Ms. Gavin for her help in making this happen.

We look forward to keeping you updated on our learning in Term 3.

For now, signing off with our last writing piece of Term 2,

Jack Berne, Year 2

Technology Showcase

The Junior School Glasshouse was filled with excitement for the Term 2 Technology Showcase. There was a great buzz from parents and students as everyone explored the different projects from this term.

  • Year 4 built robots and created code for their robots to perform the Hokey Pokey Dance
  • Year 5 developed a presentation for the Mars Colony expo to persuade settler to relocate. They created their world in Minecraft, a website, poster and advertisement using green screen technology.
  • Year 6 coded their own arcade game which people could play on laptops or scan the QR code to play on phones or iPads.

Interschool STEM Challenge

Kinross Wolaroi Junior School hosted Blue Mountains Grammar School in June for the inaugural Interschool STEM Challenge. The focus is not on competition. The principles of teamwork, collaboration, and communication are emphasized allowing the students to challenge their own thinking and learn from their peers. The concept of the Interschool STEAM Challenge falls into many of the Round Square Discovery Framework principles including Teamwork, Tenacity, Inventiveness, Communication, Diversity, Problem Solving, Inquisitiveness and Courage.

12 students from each school worked together on STEM challenges including a LEGO Marble run, using Kapla blocks to make the tallest tower and coding LEGO spike to negotiate a set course. Another STEM day is planned in Semester 2.

WriteOn Competition 2023

WriteOn is an annual writing competition open to all NSW primary students in Years 1 to 6. This competition provides students with the opportunity to become published authors and showcase their creativity.

Students are required to write an imaginative text based on a picture stimulus. Only three children can be selected from each school to be entered into the competition.

Congratulations to Sofia Buckley (Year 2), Claire Gordon (Year 4) and Charlotte Gurr (Year 5) on their creative responses which will be entered into the competition.

Sofia wrote an imaginative adventure about a little girl called Maya who discovers a magical bottle. Claire took readers on a wild adventure starting in the Sahara desert and finishing on top of Big Ben in London in a quest to reunite two siblings. Charlotte told a gripping story about 4 boys on a mission to find a healing flower which will save their family village from devastation.
