STEM Science updates...
This term, we have been diving into the world of Earth and Space Sciences and been guided by the Engineering Design Process to work through a range of open-ended problems or questions that require students to work in a team and problem solve together.
In our Earth and Space Sciences unit, students have been exploring the wonders of our planet and the vastness of the universe. Through engaging hands-on activities and thought-provoking discussions, we have been learning about various topics, such as the water cycle, weather patterns, and the solar system.
Our young scientists have had the opportunity to investigate and understand the forces and processes that shape our planet, as well as the mysteries of outer space. In addition to our Earth and Space Sciences unit, during STEM sessions students have participated in mini challenges or more involved investigations specifically designed to foster the inquiry-driven process and follow the Engineering Design Process.
Currently our 3-6 students are working on designing and constructing a Rube Goldberg Machine. This collaborative project has fostered teamwork, problem-solving skills, and creativity among students. For those unfamiliar with a Rube Goldberg Machine, it is a contraption that performs a simple task in an overly complicated, chain-reaction way.
Our students have been enthusiastically brainstorming ideas, designing intricate steps, and building their own unique machines. Through this project, they have gained a deeper understanding of cause and effect, as well as the importance of perseverance when challenges arise.
