Wellbeing and Inclusion

at Willy

(Repeat)

Dear families,

As part of our continual work aligned with the Disability Inclusion Reform, staff have recently undertaken professional learning and reflection on the range of adjustments and accommodations we make in our classrooms, in order to support the varying needs of all our students.

Adjustments made for our Willy Kids sit in four categories:

  • Physical
  • Cognitive
  • Sensory
  • Social/Emotional

Whilst many adjustments and accommodations are incorporated and planned for through our quality and differentiated teaching practices, supplementary, substantial and extensive adjustments are also made depending on the needs of the child.

Examples of Quality Differentiated Teaching Adjustments include:

  • differentiation of curriculum learning activities
  • use of enabling prompts
  • additional visual prompts and schedules
  • physical and manipulative materials available
  • seating arrangements
  • visual timetables in classrooms
  • small group targeted focus groups
  • additional time to complete tasks

Examples of Supplementary Adjustments include:

  • individualised social stories
  • front-loading change and daily routine
  • specific brain break times
  • proximity to teacher
  • reduced quantity and complexity of task
  • additional opportunities for practise and questions
  • use of timers
  • visual task boards
  • break tasks into smaller manageable steps

Examples of Substantial Adjustments include:

  • 1:1 modeling/instruction by teacher
  • adapted sporting equipment
  • use of technology to support task
  • Education Support (ES) staff working with student
  • personalise breaks with ES
  • behaviour support plan
  • implementation of recommendations by specialists - health care
  • modified timetable
  • use to assistive technology

  • physical assistance with some activities
  • frequent use of noise cancelling headphones
  • specialised writing tools

Examples of Extensive Adjustments include:
