Year 9 Hoodies Semester 1

The Year 9 Textiles students in Semester 1 had the opportunity to make a hoodie. They followed the necessary instructions, guided by me, to construct their first garment. They did a fantastic job and you can see the results. Some of these will feature in the annual School Yearbook and our Showcase (Term 4) that exhibits all of the great work that the Textiles students produce.

Year 10 Art Making & Exhibiting

Starting Semester 2 for Year 10 Art Making and Exhibiting, Ms O’Brien’s students have been actively exploring and manipulating the medium of clay. This is part of their assessment for Pots with Personality. They have quickly learnt appropriate hand skills and the use of various equipment to create and detail their pots before glazing and firing them. Please take a look at the photos of the class in action.

Book in a Day Workshops

This year’s workshop day for our aspiring writers and illustrators, hosted by John Paul College, was a wonderful opportunity for our Book in a Day team to be mentored by industry professionals.

Authors Andrea Rowe and Coral Vass mentored students through character development and advanced writing techniques. Both authors were inspirational and engaged students with insights into their own writing methods, as well as demonstrating the key elements of effective story telling.

The illustrator sessions were equally enlightening. The first session was presented by award winning comic book artist, Dean Rankine, best known for his work on The Simpsons, Futurama and the Rick and Morty comics. In the second session, author and illustrator Nicky Johnston explored visual story telling techniques, and how to extend the text of a story through illustration. Both illustrators gave students hands-on experience developing illustrations of their own characters and were very encouraging with their feedback.

The day culminated with team members working together on a mini Book in a Day task, planning a story and developing characters using the prompts provided.

Nazareth’s Book in a Day team thoroughly enjoyed this experience and felt that it was excellent preparation for the competition day coming up on August 10.

Poetry in Action Incursion - Year 8

To enhance their understanding of poetry and literature, Year 8 students recently attended an Incursion with ‘Poetry In Action,’ an innovative touring theatre company with an enduring dedication to unlocking the power of words for everyone. Students were thoroughly engaged with the fast paced and entertaining 45-minute presentation, enjoying the humorous and dynamic performance of this highly respected group.

Through their unique interpretations of poetic works ranging from Yeats through to Eminem, the ‘Poetry in Action’ team helped our students gain an appreciation of poetic techniques, and a newfound enthusiasm for using poetry as a valuable form of self-expression.

Year 9 Reflection Day

As part of the Faith and Development Program, a Reflection Day was held for Year 9 students on Friday 21 July.

The Reflection Day was conducted by the Youth Mission Team Australia and the theme for the day was ‘Self Image’. Students had the opportunity to reflect on their own self-understanding, the view the media may want them to adopt of themselves and their true beauty and goodness as creatures made in the image and likeness of God.

It was a great day, taking time out to reflect on their life and faith journey.

Taster Days

We're thrilled to share the amazing success of our two taster days for Years 4-6 students on July 19 and 26! Over 150 enthusiastic students from various nearby schools participated on July 19, excited to experience a day at Nazareth. On July 26, we welcomed Year 5 students from Silverton and Mulgrave Primary for another fantastic taster day.

During both events, students had the opportunity to explore three diverse classes, including their preferred electives. From PE and STEM to Art, Textiles, Dance, Food Tech, Performing Arts, Italian, Wood Tech, and Science – there was something for everyone to enjoy and learn from. A heartfelt thank you to all our dedicated staff members whose efforts made these two taster days an incredible success!

Biggest Morning Tea

The Nazareth Staff showed their support for the Cancer Council by holding the Biggest Morning Tea fundraiser last week.  Organised by Ms Barbara Murphy, cooks and non cooks alike provided delicious food which was enjoyed during recess.  There was a guessing game held which offered a cash prize.  The winner promptly donated the money back.  It was a great morning, talking and sharing food while raising more than $700.00.

SIS Teen Chef Championship

This week our team of chefs were enjoying our new Food Tech space while preparing for the SIS Teen Chef Championship to be held in Frankston next week.

This competition between schools is in the style of a “Masterchef” structure and contributes to the development of students in SIS Member schools by offering students are chance to heighten the profile for the Food Technology industries.  Representing our school next week will be Year 8s, Elisha M and Alice C, Liani M from Year 9 and Joshua N and Jackson D from Year 11, accompanied by Ms Goodwin.  They will be preparing and Aussie Pub style meal with a touch of Indigenous flavour. Go team Naz, and good luck next week!

House Athletics Carnival

Keeping warm was one of the aims for the House Athletics Carnival, held on Monday 24 July at the Knox Athletic Track.  However, the cold weather did not put a dampener on the enthusiasm of the students as they competed for House points and personal best results.

Congratulations to all students who participated at the House Athletics Carnival. This year saw record numbers of participation for all events. Well done to MacKillop House as the overall winner for 2023.
