SEL in the Senior School
Through the process of social-emotional learning (SEL) students develop self awareness, self-control and interpersonal skills. These are important for school, work and life outcomes.
This term the Senior students are learning about IDENTITY, DIVERSITY, EQUITY, INCLUSION and BELONGING.
They will be exploring their own identity by learning about their values and character traits. By understanding.....
....more about themselves as people they can begin to understand the differences and diversity of others. They will enhance the HEART values of EMPATHY, ACCEPTANCE and RESPECT by learning about neurodiversity, racism and intolerance.
As they work through this unit looking at how identity affects our place in society and how society affects how we express our identity they are addressing these overarching statements
The students began the unit by completing the VIA Character Strengths Profile.
Character strengths are the positive parts of your personality that make you feel authentic and engaged.
An example of this was demonstrated by one of our Senior Students using one of his top Character Strengths - Leadership - to lead the 1/2 students through a range of soccer drills this week. (when our PE teacher was away!)
Feedback from the children was positive.
"It has been fun having Noah teach us skills. It is fun and he is teaching us a lot. He is showing good leadership by telling us to do the right thing." - Savio
"Noah was good at teaching. He is good at soccer." - Chenuth
Noah's own reflection was positive too, and he realised some things about himself and the character trait of leadership. He also realised that you don't just have to know how to play the game - you have to lead through patience and by helping and showing the younger kids who don't know the game of soccer very well.
Opportunities for the seniors to showcase their character strengths throughout the term will be a chance for them to develop and reflect on their traits as well as recognise the strong traits of their peers.
