Special Visitors in Assembly

By Ann Ridder

A man called Warren Smith and I have a long standing friendship, due to growing up at Syndal Baptist Church together. He was actually fundamental to gaining my first part time job in a Health Food shop as a Year 10 student; Warren already worked there. Warren and his family have now attended TLC Church for a long time, where he has established a friendship with Andy and the Callow family.

A few years ago I took group of students with Andy, on an excursion to Warren’s workplace - Splitting Image Colour

Studio, a Pre-Press Company in Clayton. Splitting Image is the colour separation studio that Graeme Base uses for each of his books, so he and Warren also have a long standing relationship. Jono Callow came to work with Warren and Graeme a number of years ago and together the three of them have a business called ‘The Base Factory.’

Through those connections, when voices were needed for the digital version of Animalia some years ago, BHCS was

asked to be involved. A number of staff and one student - Spencer Dam (little Graeme), had so much fun putting on different voices and quoting text from the Animalia book during recordings with Jono.

As thanks to our school, we were very privileged to have Graeme share some of his life’s journey with a small group

of students and staff last week before he came to assembly. His passion and enthusiasm for his work were inspiring.

During assembly, Graeme presented BHCS with a beautiful, limited edition print from the book Animalia which will be hung in our Reception area.

We thank Graeme, Warren and Jono for taking the time to come and share in the life of our school.

On 20th July, we were fortunate to have Natalie Ong visit our whole school assembly to share her singing talent with us. Natalie is a Year 10 student from Waverley Christian College and is currently a contestant on The X Factor.

Last month she sang at Parliament House for the Christian Schools National Policy Forum in front of a large gathering of school principals and members of parliament.

During our assembly, Natalie sang “Love you I do” by Jennifer Hudson, and “The Voice Within” by Christine Aguilera. We were amazed as this soft-spoken and humble girl opened her voice and sung with such strength and control.

We wish Natalie all the best as she pursues her dreams.
