Studio Arts

As the year 12 Studio Arts teacher in 2018, it gives a great sense of pride to announce and congratulate current 2019 year 12 student, Natalie Buultjens and previous year 12 student, Chloe Hazledine upon being successful applicants for the Maroondah Art Exhibition, ‘Pure Talent’ which showcases VCE Visual Art work of students from 2018 that attended secondary schools in the Maroondah area. This is a huge recognition for these students who have the privilege of exhibiting one of their artworks. The Exhibition launch is at 6pm on Wednesday 3rd April and is on display until 27th April at Wyreena Community Arts Centre, 13-23 Hull Rd, Croydon.

Natalie Buultjens "THE STAGES OF ANGER"

The landscape 'The Stages of Anger' is a representation of a person feeling the primal and fierce emotion of anger. The work represents the developmental stages of this emotion. It does this by visually taking the viewer on a ride through the stages of a Tornado in its natural setting. I believe that nature directly mirrors human emotions, and that the Tornado reflects the 3 main stages of anger. Firstly, representing being upset, the feeling of unrest. Secondly, acting irrationally and even brutally, with no regard to the consequences of its actions. Thirdly, the tornado represents the feeling of regret after the outburst.

The viewer and those involved are left looking at the aftermath.

Chloe Hazledine "GROWING THOUGHTS”

My composition aims to capture a visual representation of the unseen mind. The abundance of leaves ascending out of the face in my artwork convey different thoughts and how our minds and thoughts are constantly growing and changing. The mind in my piece is depicted as a garden. The garden is created as a symbolic metaphor, that people must nurture and weed out inner thoughts in order to produce a flourishing life filled garden.

This exhibition occurs annually and I encourage all VCE Visual Arts students to make some time to attend and view the range of artworks displayed.

Vic Metro Women’s Masters

Last weekend two of our strong, female role models on staff were in action at Marvel Stadium representing Vic Metro Women’s Masters.

It was a curtain-raiser to round six AFLW that backed on to International Women`s Day. Both Ms Boutsikakis and Ms Hetherington are passionate about developing the participation and opportunities in sport for girls in our college community.  The AFL recently announced that women contributed significantly to the participation growth, with numbers up 14.42% for women playing the game in 2018. This is reflected in the growth of our girls taking up sport and for the 35 yrs + female parents/guardians of our community if you have ever thought about returning to our taking up footy there is a competition just for you. The seasons starts April 13th. http://www.womensaflmasters.com.au/

Year 11 Geography Bushfire Camp

Last week 22 Year 11 Geography students explored the sites of the 2009 Black Saturday disaster for their Hazards Unit.

They saw the impact of the bushfire 10 years on in the devastated communities of Maysville, Kinglake and Toolangi, and talked to locals, scientists and guest speakers who lead the response and recovery from the bushfire. We went to the bushfire museum in Marysville, explored the rebuilding and new memorials and spent dusk under the stars, identifying native animals in their habitat in the Toolangi State Forest.

The students had a fun and tiring time, and are looking forward to putting all their new knowledge into their field reports.

Intercultural Leadership Mentoring Program

On Thursday March 7th, twenty of our Year 8 – 12 students received their training to become an Intercultural Mentor. The program aimed to help students to build their leadership and mentoring skills in order to support newcomers to the school. The highly interactive one day workshop provided students with the skills needed to mentor an international student or recently arrived refugee or migrant student at our school.

Students were given the opportunity to explore the basic concepts of culture, recognise how we see things from our own cultural perspective, build an understanding of student support and mentoring and learn techniques and activities that can be shared during the mentoring process to support students from different cultures.

Thank you to the staff from AFS Intercultural for running a really effective leadership program. We look forward to putting these skills into practice with our International students in Term 2!
