RSC Work Futures EXPO 2019

In previous articles I have focussed on the work being done by the RSC Work Futures committee to bring this Expo 2019 to fruition.  Now we can talk about some of the factors that the research group, the ‘Foundation for Young Australians’ (fya), highlights for students leaving school, which is the reason for this expo in June.

People refer to their work as employment or ‘a job’, and many have desires of a DREAM JOB.  The (fya) believes that we should now be considering the DREAM CLUSTER, as many jobs require similar skills and practices to perform.  When a school leaver considers applying for a job they can use the formalised skills they already have, they should also consider what other jobs are available where those skills can also be used.  Employers advertising for staff now demand an employee has more than one skill.

Some jobs we see being advertised were not created until this century.  This is due to new technology and how computers and digital systems are employed within the workplace.  I was surprised to hear that a new job role in this hi-tech world is a Gamer.  Yes, a person who designs computer-based games, where players apply their game skills to advance through skill levels to be a winner.  Many will know these games.  The basic skills probably came from many years of playing computer games.  A new market has been created by those who can understand the machine coding required, maybe as Bill Gates did so many years ago.  A person with these skills would be in THE TECHNOLOGISTS job cluster.  Other jobs in this cluster include programmers, database administrators and web designers.

By comparison, people who have a good knowledge of science, mathematics and design skills would find work as architects, electrical engineers, product testers and geologists, in THE DESIGNERS job cluster.  There are 7 clusters in Australia where jobs requiring similar skills are grouped together and are known by cluster names.

At first glance some jobs within a cluster may look odd, but a closer look at the skills required for each show that all are based around the same basic skill sets.  This gives an employee access to seek a wider range of jobs in a cluster that requires their basic skills and provides opportunities to increase those skills to apply for different and more fulfilling work in that cluster.
