International Women's Day signifies a time for the celebration of women’s achievements and taking a stand against inequalities for all of us. This year’s theme, #EachforEqual resonates with the Sacré Cœur community as we fight against gender bias and stereotypes, encouraging an equal, enabled world. #EachforEqual evokes the spirit in us all to persist in the overwhelming task of breaking down gender barriers. As we annually celebrate International Women’s Day, we continue to see positive changes in society, as well as in the Sacré Cœur Community.

Each year, the Year 10 cohort is responsible for a display under the Brown Stairs, as well as leading an International Women’s Day Breakfast to celebrate this momentous day. We, as a Year Level, are encouraged to invite our mother or significant adult to join us for breakfast and witness presentations relating to the power of women.

2020 saw us lead the breakfast with intriguing questions addressed to the recently returned Sophie’s Farm alumnae, Rhea Shami, Mary Wallace,  Emily Palmer and Ella Gray relating to their experiences and how they saw equality expressed at Sophie’s Farm in the Philippines. These inspiring young women explained how the workers worked in unison and supported one another as they strived for excellence in their tasks. The girls were clearly inspired by the leadership shown among the RSCJ nuns, especially Sr Lydia, who took on the responsibility of running Sophie’s Farm. The workload was evenly distributed and no task was designated to a specific gender; you were able to work in accordance with your skills. The Alumnae spoke of their gratitude emanating from their involvement in the program and how each of them has benefited deeply, inspiring us all to take on the challenge in future.
