Logans

Welcome back to term 4.

It was exciting to hear of all the wonderful stories from our students who traveled to Cambodia during the holidays.

Logans were well represented by 10 students and one staff member.

We would like to acknowledge Tanner Calderwood, Tashnee Cashin, Alannah Alexander, Maggie Fogarty, Sophie Judson, Ashlan Noonan, Taylah Porter, Steph Rea, Dylan Russell, Finn Stratford and Sandra Skilbeck for giving up part of their school holidays to help volunteer and put into practice what they had learnt at Taksenkangbloung Community Centre - a day centre located near the Angkor temples that supports approximately 80 children in their quest to gain an education.  For those wanting to know more about the work of Taksenkangbloung Community Centre, please visit http://www.taksenkangbloung.org

CONGRATULATIONS to Brianna Kilpatrick and Maddison Drake who were part of the EKB team to compete in the FISAF International World Sports Aerobics and Fitness Championships 2019 which were held in the Netherlands.

These girls can now say they are 6th in the world. This is an outstanding achievement and thoroughly deserved. Your commitment, dedication and hard work is something to be very proud of.

Food Share Visit

On September 19, the Logans Student Leaders went to Foodshare. They learnt many things including that approximately 59,000 people have been helped by Foodshare. In the past 6 years, hundreds of hampers have been delivered every week to families in our community, including our school and it costs approximately $100,000 a year to house and run Foodshare.

The support from the Warrnambool community is amazing and this session gave students an insight into how our fundraising and food drives contribute to the sustainability of Foodshare. Students also got hands on to see the jobs the volunteers perform.

Thank you Warrnambool And District Food Share for having us.

Warrnambool College Photo Challenge

Congratulations to Taya Polack from year 8 for taking out first prize in the Warrnambool College Photo Challenge. The theme this year was “Capture the Color”.  Taya’s painting can be viewed in the library. Well done.

Portrait of the Hour

Finn Stratford was on of 5 Warrnambool College students to participate in the “Portrait of the hour challenge” with local musician Shane Howard.

This was a great opportunity for Finn which saw him able to use a range of different mediums to create a variety of images.

Merri

At the end of last term 25 students and four staff members were fortunate enough to travel to Cambodia to visit the Taksenkangbluong Community Centre. This was part of a responsible tourism culture tour ran by the college. As you may be aware, the Taksenkangbluong Community Centre is the very grateful beneficiary of the Merri House philanthropic efforts each year. Over the course of this year the Merri house, with the help of the school community, was able to fundraise over $3500. This money was donated to the Taksenkangbluong Community Centre to support students and families in the Cambodian community access education. The students who went on this tour had the opportunity to see first-hand how the funds, donated by the Merri House, were put to use. From a Tuk-Tuk that transports students to and from the community centre each day, to classroom materials such as books and pencils that make learning at the centre possible, it was obvious that the funds were valued and being put to good use.

It was an enlightening experience to watch the students at the Taksenkangbluong Community Centre be so welcoming to our Warrnambool College students. The students played together and learnt from each other, and in just three short days, the students had built such beautiful strong relationships that we hope will continue through an email buddy system.

We want to take this opportunity to thank all the families who helped us support the Taksenkangbluong Community Centre through your donations throughout the year and hope we can work together to continue to support the centre for years to come.

Every fortnight we have a Merri House Assembly where we like to celebrate student achievements and recognise them for their positive contributions to the Merri House and Warrnambool College as a whole. Students are consistently recognised for an outstanding attendance record of over 95% for the two week cycle, significant merit milestones and also the whole tutes achievement in the intertute competition each week. This week saw the addition of a new award. This award is a lolly jar that will be awarded to a Merri student who has gone above and beyond in displaying the schools values of mutual respect, resilience and persistence. This week this award was awarded to a student who, as reported by their teacher on Compass,

“…was amazing today helping other students clean up after their practical work without any  direction. The help was provided to students in need, so thank you for your thoughtfulness”

The first recipient of this reward was year 7 Merri student – Millie Howlett.

Congratulations Millie. I look forward to presenting this award to another Merri students next house assembly.

Over the course of next week we will also be saying farewell to our Merri class of 2019. This will involve a Merri assembly on Monday, a year 12 farewell breakfast on Wednesday and finally a whole school assembly on Friday. We would like to take this opportunity to send our best wishes to all of the year 12 Merri students for who their time at Warrnambool College is coming to an end. We hope you have the opportunity to reflect and look back at your time at Warrnambool College and as member of the Merri house and take some incredible memories with you. Good luck for your exams and more importantly your time beyond secondary school.
