Swimming Carnival

The 2015 Mater Dei Catholic College Twilight Swimming Carnival was held on Thursday 5th February and saw students from all Houses compete with great spirit under the catch-cry of “5 Houses- 1 Home”. It was another hot day which saw students keen to get in the pool in diving, championship and novelty events. House pride was on the line and the House Coordinators and Captains led the way with a highlight of the night once again being the House Chant, taken out by Webber. A big thank you must go to all staff for their hard work in ensuring another successful College event.
The Mater Dei Swimming Carnival aims to provide opportunity for competition as well as participation. In 2015 this saw the inclusion of an additional division in the 13 and 14 Years freestyle and breaststroke events whilst the novelty events again proved popular and gave all students the chance to represent their House and contribute points for the carnival. It was great to see so many parents cheering on the competitors throughout the night. Thanks must go to Jacinta Creighton and the OASIS staff, Kayleen and Tom Murphy and Marg Deveries and their team for their help in running the timing system and their invaluable help in preparation for the carnival, and to the Wagga Swim Club for providing a BBQ.
After such successful carnivals in 2013 and 2014, where just short of 20 records were broken in individual events on each occasion, it was hard to see this being topped. However, 2015 literally blew these performances out of the water with 13 athletes combining to break records in a staggering 30 individual events, whilst there were 6 new records in the relays. Within these records some highlights included:
- Tim Murphy taking 16 and 12 seconds off his own 200m IM and 200m Freestyle records,
- Billy Nicholson taking 6 seconds off the 16 Boys 50m Breaststroke
- Phebe McLeod breaking the 50m Butterfly record by 5 seconds
- Rhys Mooney breaking an incredible 6 individual records
With such standout performances we will be looking to put together a very strong team to challenge TRAC’s dominance at the CWWHSSA carnival and take on the other Diocesan schools at the BISSA carnival in the coming weeks.
