Sport & Cocurricular Wrap Up

Mr Joe Priest, Director of Sport and Co‑curricular

This fortnight has been dominated by the school Swim Team, with the Championship swimming carnival held on Friday 25 February here at school, followed by the WAS Swimming Carnival on Friday 4 March.

Bianca Fuller has continued her excellent form breaking three records at the Championship Carnival. An impressive feat considering the caliber of swimmers who have come before her. Congratulations to Bianca.

The WAS Swimming Team performed strongly last Friday picking up the honors in the male overall, female overall and the co-ed shield. A fantastic result that further demonstrates the current strength of our swimming program. Thanks must go to all swimmers who competed on the day. It was a fantastic warm up for the ISA carnival on Wednesday 9 March. Good luck to all athletes heading to Homebush.

Triathlon

The members of our Triathlon squad have been busy in the lead up to NSW All Schools Triathlon. Well done to the students who travelled to Huskisson, performing strongly in the age group races. Well done to Tomasso, who won his age group in the 1km ocean swim on Friday to back it up with first place in the Super Sprint Triathlon on Saturday.  Last weekend the triathlon squad attended the Orange Runners Festival. They were helped by a few other likeminded Kinross Wolaroi students on the day. Congratulations to the team who managed to win the overall High School Shield. A fantastic effort and a great display of school spirit. A massive thank you to Mrs Chandler who organized the team on the day.

'Big Husky' Triathlon Festival

‘Big Husky’ was held on February 25-27 in Huskisson. It is a multi-race weekend attracting thousands of competitors of all ages from around the country.

Kinross Wolaroi students who competed at the event included: Tom Cornelius-Feltus, Isobella Montagliani, George Hogg and Sophie Martin.

Isobella competed in the Super Sprint Triathlon at ‘Big Husky’. The race was a 200 metre ocean swim, 8 km cycle and 2km run. Isobella finished 11th in the 14-15 female category. A super achievement.

George and Sophie raced in the Sprint distance Triathlon (750m ocean swim, 20 km cycle, 5 km run). Sophie finished 9th in the 16-19 yrs female category and George came 10th in the 14-15 yrs males, a great accomplishment. There were 1550 competitors in the race overall.

Tom had a massive weekend, he warmed up with the 1 km ocean swim on the Friday afternoon. He finished 1st in his age group and 2nd overall.

On Saturday he went back for more in the Super Sprint Triathlon. He came 1st in his age group and 3rd overall. On Sunday Tom was part of a mixed team relay in the Classic triathlon. Tom swam 1km, his sister Mercede cycled the 60km bike leg and a Bathurst Tri Club member ran the 10km. The team lead the team race and finished in 1st place in Classic Relay Teams section.

Completing a triathlon is an achievement. To see our students putting their training into action, representing the School in their Kinross Wolaroi trisuits, is a proud moment.

Touch Football

On Saturday 26 February, Kinross Wolaroi hosted an ISA touch football Gala Day. This involved Kinross Wolaroi, Scotts All Saints, Oxley College & Chevalier College. It was a great day with over 20 games of touch football being played. The girls had a blast and enjoyed some form of normality back playing touch football against other schools. Below are a couple of match reports from students and some awesome results.

KWS 1STS

Once again Kinross 1st had a ripper of a day coming away with two great wins over Chevs and Oxley. With the scores of 11-2 and 16-2. Each one of the girls played awesome as they had to play back-to-back games with only 9 players, but thankful to our superstar wingers Steph Wong and Phoebe Gordon who stepped up and played the whole two games. Our incredibly talented Heidi Ferguson showed off her amazing ball handling skills to send Airlie Mason over the try line. Overall, our team is improving with each game and the rest of the season is going to be great.

Josie Clarke (Touch Football Captain)

KWS 2NDS

KWS Seniors Seconds played against Chevalier College on Saturday at Kinross.

The girls all worked well together with lots of great movement and attack up the field.

Josie Muddle and Abby Kiss played well together setting up some great plays.

Alice Kerile had fast movement gaining the KWS team many metres up the field.

The try scoring started happening by Chole Muddle, Abby Kiss, Alice Kerlie and Elle McGufficke bringing the girls victory with a 4-2 win.

Learning the Ropes at the State Open Swim Championships

NSW State Open Swimming Championships saw members of the Kinross Wolaroi Team achieve several national qualifying times and provided strong preparation for the Australian Championships in April.

Head Coach, Kim Taylor, said the NSW meet at Homebush was dominated by Olympic-standard swimmers and was an opportunity to give the Kinross Wolaroi team experience in an elite competition environment.

Ellie McMiles (Year 11) swam a new national qualifier in the 100m freestyle, securing her place in the national sprint freestyle double of 50m and 100m. She showed her versatility by posting another national qualifying time for her freestyle sprint program in the 200m individual medley.

Edwina Waterman (Year 9) bettered her 200m backstroke national qualifying time and booked herself a berth in the 200m backstroke ‘B’ final, where she rubbed shoulders with Tokyo gold medallist, Kaylee McKeown.

Juggling HSC study with a heavy workload in the pool, Bianca Fuller (Year 12) had two solid swims to make the ‘B’ finals for both the 100m butterfly and 200m breaststroke: bettering her times in the final.

Kyla Brown (Year 10) achieved a PB in her 50m breaststroke, also giving her a berth in the ‘B’ finals.

Kim Taylor said, “Adelaide is looking like it will be full of Kinross Wolaroi swimmers come April when hundreds of elite and aspiring athletes will descend on the city for the Australian Swimming Championships.”

The Australian Championships will take place at the SA Aquatic & Leisure Centre between 4-9 April, followed by the Australian Age Swimming Championships, scheduled for 11-18 April.
