KOORIE CORNER

Shout out to GSSC staff and students who attended the Annual Apology Breakfast hosted by Shepparton Region Reconciliation Group on Monday 14th February. The anniversary of the National Apology to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians is a significant day in Australia’s history, but really just the first step on the road to reconciliation.

GSSC has been nominated to host a “campfire conversations” event. This event will be held later in Term 1. Find out more here. Details of our event are to follow.

Reflect

What:   National Apology

When:  13th February 2008

Who:     Former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd

Why:     Every Aboriginal family has a story of displacement, intervention and/or trauma.  On 13th February 2008, former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd apologised on behalf of the nation for past laws, policies and practices that have impacted upon Australia’s First Nations Peoples, particularly members of the Stolen Generations.

Reflect: It is an important time to reflect on how generations of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples have been affected, and will continue to be affected, by the past policies of the Australian Government and the ongoing impacts of this on the mental health and wellbeing of Indigenous Australians.
