PREP

What a great start to our Preps of 2022!

On Monday 7th February, the Prep students completed their first day of school. They started the day with learning the morning routine, meeting all their classmates and getting ready for a big day! There were minimal tears, happy goodbyes and only a couple of students who needed a nap during the day.

Although students were ready for lunch at 9:30, they patiently waited until the allocated time. They made sure they ate their sandwich first (or something equivalent) before enjoying their special treats.

They continued the rest of their day with smiles and participating in more fun activities.

The Prep teachers are so proud of all the efforts from their students so far and look forward to an amazing year ahead.

Year 1 news

The year 1 students have settled into a brand new school year. The first few days were spent taking part in the Start Up program, where we visited the expectations in the classroom when reading, writing and using maths equipment. Students have started to build relationships with their year 1 teachers and their classmates. The School Wide Positive Behaviour Matrix has been reintroduced to the students and families will notice that awards are being achieved and sent home. Students are receiving these awards when they demonstrate certain positive behaviours out in the yard and other areas of the school.

Year 1 students have started to take home readers on a daily basis. Year 1 students are expected to read for 15 minutes each night. They are beginning to gain more independence when choosing their books to read at home. These books may be a Just right book and sometimes, words may be a bit more challenging. Reading at home should be an enjoyable part of your child’s learning. More news about homework will follow in due course.

Check out the photos of some of the amazing work that students have completed in the Year 1 space.

Year 2

Dear year Two Families,

The Year Two students are settling back into school routines and expectations as we move through the term. It has been so nice to see everyone back together onsite and we thank parents and guardians for their support and encouragement.

During our first week we got to know each other through games and simple activities and revised our 4 R’s…Rights, Respect, Resilience and Relationships. We also worked on establishing routines and expectations to foster positive outcomes in the classroom and during outside play.

In literacy we have been reading stories and asking students to give their opinions or summarise the text. Students have also been practising writing recounts and sharing lots of things and places they enjoyed in the holidays.

Reading will soon begin to focus on spelling and comprehension

Recounts will be a feature of writing in term 1 as well as grammar and storybook lessons. These lessons concentrate on specific texts rich in ideas and vocabulary.

Maths has been a revision of skip counting and has also included problem solving activities.

We will be moving on to counting and place value shortly.

In Play based lessons we are working together on the idea of identity. We begin with exploring and respecting our individual identities and move on to our class and then school identity as members of Brookside College.

Students are also participating in their specialist classes of French, Art, PE and Drama. Library class sessions also began last week and the students were excited to explore our brand new library space.
