Level 3/4

Level 3 and 4

We have had a great start to the year in Level 3 and 4. We have been doing lots of start-up activities to get ourselves ready for the school year. We have well and truly established our daily routines and have been introduced to our workshop models for Reading, Writing and Maths.

We have had a great couple of weeks in Level 3! In our Reading sessions students have been learning how to choose “Just Right” books. Students are also engaging in Daily Writes, which is a ten minute ‘burst’ of writing completed in the mornings on a topic of choice. During our Maths sessions we have focused on counting and place value, namely being able to read, write and represent 4-digit numbers. We have also started our homework program and have seen some creative entries already on Seesaw.

In Level 4 for Literacy this week we have been working on Bio Poems and Book Boxes. In Writing, we have been creating Bio Poems about ourselves. In Reading, we started our book boxes project. We have started decorating our book boxes and getting them ready for our Reading Workshops. We launched into our independent reading by focusing on reading “Just Right” books and doing some real reading. For Maths, our current focus is on establishing our expectations for Maths for the school year and developing our skills in Place Value. We are learning about the different ways we can show Place Value including Extended Notation, Partitioning, using concrete materials, real life examples and counting charts.

On Friday afternoons we have been all been participating in 3/4 Sport and have been learning about all the different types of track and field events in preparation for our school athletics carnival. This has been a great opportunity to learn new skills and challenge ourselves. Level 3 have continued with our Flora and Fauna program, where students partake in weekly rotations in gardening, cooking, science and sustainability. The feedback so far has been very encouraging. If you would like to know more about Flora and Fauna, head to the dedicated page in the newsletter. In Level 4 we have also kicked off some learning about Cyber Safety and E-Smart training by participating in a webinar. We will continue to work on these skills over the course of the year and participate in E-Smart week later this year. We have also been working on developing our skills using laptops. We have started to the use application ‘Word’. Creating some word art using word art cloud, which we are using to decorate book boxes. We will continue to work on expanding skills in this area.

A reminder for Level 4 families that we are now sending communication books home on Mondays and they need to be returned on Fridays. In these books we are sending home homework, spelling and reminders about things going on in the class. Please make sure to help your child work through these tasks and sign the book before you send it back to school.

We hope you have all had a great start to the year and look forward to a fun filled year of learning.
