Mathematics

Welcome to Mathematics at Rangeview!

Last week we included tips for our F-2 families on ways to engage children in a ‘week of Maths’ at home. For all F-6 families we included a game called NIM 7 that can be played at home and with everyday objects. In this issue, we explore ‘Twos-day’, provide details for a Dart Board Brain Teaser and a game the whole family can play called Strike it Out.

FUN FACT #1: On March 14th, light from the sun takes approximately 495 seconds, or 8 minutes and 15 seconds, to reach us on earth.

FUN FACT #2:  “Let It Go” from Disney’s Frozen has been streamed over 363,100,000 times on Spotify.

TWOS-DAY

This week on Tuesday the date was 22/2/22. Teachers, students and parents around the world celebrated this ‘once in a lifetime’ event referred to as ‘Twos-day’! It’s also a palindrome date, meaning the date can be read the same way backwards and forwards. Many of our classes celebrated Twos-day by engaging in Maths activities relating to the number 2, by working in pairs and we even had a few teachers and students wearing tutus!

MATHS BRAIN TEASER

The below Brain Teaser is aimed at our middle and senior students and is reproduced here from CSIRO’s Double Helix magazine. We suggest problem solving it together with your children… who will find the solution first?

At the 2022 World Darts Championship, William Borland beat Bradley Brooks with a perfect final leg, scoring precisely 501 points. On a dart board, there are areas numbered 1 through to 20. Near the rim, the points are doubled, and on a small ring closer in, the points are tripled instead. Right in the middle, there is an outer bullseye worth 25 points and an inner one worth 50 points.

William got exactly 501 points with only 9 darts. His final throw was a double 12, worth 24 points.

Can you work out what his other throws were?
