Science
The start of the year has been a busy time in Science at Heathmont College. The Year 12 Biology class was lucky to go on excursion to GTAC on Wednesday 2nd March. On excursion the students were able to manipulate DNA in E.coli and separate DNA fragments.
The year 11 Chemistry class has been busy examining the bonding of different molecules and were able to make some of these structures with marshmallows and raspberries. Some molecules may have disappeared after they were made! Year 11 and 10 Biology have been examining cells and different organelles found in cells. They were lucky to make these cells out of some tasty ingredients. The year 9s have been looking at light and how our eyes interpret colour. The year 8s have starting looking at electricity and the year 7s have been busy getting to know the science labs and Bunsen burners. The science department is looking forward to continuing these exciting activities into next term.

Year 11 Chemistry
Students in Year 11 chemistry have been studying the structures of compounds. To help them understand ionic compounds better, the students made models of sodium chloride (table salt) using marshmallows and red lolly frogs to represent the sodium and chloride particles, and using toothpicks to represent the bonds that hold them together. This allowed them to visualise the relative positions of the particles and better understand the nature of these compounds. The students were very engaged in this activity, and enjoyed eating the leftover marshmallows.
