Reading for Pleasure – Bright Reading ideas

Bonnie Ahles - Library

Research shows that students who chose to read self-selected literature for pleasure performed better in English, mathematics, science, and history.

All Year 7 students were recently assessed in Reading Comprehension as part of the Educational Skills assessment conducted by Academic Assessment Services.

To develop reading skills, material needs to be of appropriate difficulty; not too easy, nor too complex. Reading develops best when students read material that challenges and extends them at the right level. Books which are too difficult for beginning readers are not helpful in developing reading skills. As well, highly able readers need materials that extend them and will usually be beyond their Year level.

Lists of appropriate books have been created for each Year 7 students. Most of these books are available in our library, either as hard copy or online. The library staff can also recommend books which are appropriate for the reading level.

As well, we have included additional titles which may be attempted as students reading skills develop.

Please be aware that these books are suggestions only and are intended to indicate books of an appropriate level of difficulty. It is not intended that they reads all these books.

We encourage you to become involved by asking your child what they are reading for pleasure to ensure they are appropriate to the level of maturity and match your expectations and family values.
