Grade 6 - Parliament

Student Parliament at CHPS

The year sixes have been working on developing their leadership skills and making a change in the school. As a way to put our ideas for the school into action, in each class we created proposals. To create these proposals, we looked at data collected by school captains about what the community would like to see changed. We then brought our solutions to class meetings where we agreed on what proposals to bring to student parliament. The actual experience of running student parliament was really exciting! The multi purpose room was set up to reflect our House of Representatives with chairs set up a horseshoe and the school captains / speakers at the front. We all embraced the formality of the session and enjoyed speaking like parliamentarians! We worked very hard on our speeches and presentations and at the end we voted on our preferred proposals by putting counters in labeled tubs. We started with 85 proposals all together in our cohort, then 14 proposals at parliament and now we have 4 that will be actioned within school. We will gradually we embedding more ideas. The 4 proposals that will be moving forward based on the results of the votes are…

1. Sponsor an Australian child.

2. Sambell lodge aged care partnership to increase community connections.

3. SEAL-Sport Equipment at Lunch.

4. Making our bathrooms a more safe, positive and comfortable place by adding sanitary bins, positive messages etc.

The action teams are currently working on how to get the community involved and take action. These ideas will come to life and the school community will be able to see visible change within CHPS!!
