VUSC News Issue Three

It was wonderful to see our school community come together last Friday to celebrate 'Bullying. No Way!' Day at both campuses with lunch time activities and BBQ. Students were taught about bullying and harassment in class and how to best manage cyber risks, bullying and cyber bullying issues and incidents so that students feel safer and supported at school.
We believe it is imperative to proactively manage and prevent bullying and anti-social behaviour, and give our students the opportunity to provide input and feedback about such an important and topical issue. All students completed a confidential survey about their own thoughts on bullying behaviours and ways to address it. We also encourage parents to talk to their children about their experiences and online behaviours, and be aware of what your children are posting or sharing online.
A huge congratulations to Jermaine Tui, Derek Iva and Poasa Telepe who are travelling to Perth this week as part of the Melbourne Storm U/18’s team to play the Western Australian Pirates on Saturday. We congratulate these students on their hard work and commitment, and wish them all the best for this amazing experience.
Our Open House on Tuesday 19th March was extremely successful with a very large turnout of prospective families. Nine different classroom demonstrations were set up for parents and prospective students to view and take part in. Families were able to see first hand the kinds of lessons that our students participate in every day, from AVID, maths and science to technology, cooking and sport. A huge thank you to our staff and about 70 volunteer students who hosted the tours and helped to make it so successful. Interested parents who were unable to attend Open House can contact the Junior Campus for a tour and information pack.
Wednesday 6th March was a student free day so that teachers could spend time working together to share their classes’ data and plan for how to better meet students’ needs. Teachers worked in teams throughout the day and shared their data across Junior and Senior campuses. It was a most successful day which will result in teachers adapting your child's learning to suit their individual progress and goals.
Insurance and Ambulance Cover for Students
Parents and guardians are reminded that the Department (and the College) does not provide personal accident insurance, personal property insurance or ambulance cover for students. Parents and guardians of students, who do not have student accident insurance/ambulance cover, are responsible for paying the cost of medical treatment for injured students, including the cost of ambulance attendance/transport and any other transport costs.
Private property brought to school by students, staff or visitors is not insured and the Department does not accept any responsibility for any loss or damage. Parents and guardians can purchase insurance policies and ambulance cover from commercial insurers if they wish for their child.
A reminder that parent teacher interviews will be held on Thursday 4 April and students will be dismissed at 1.30pm on Friday 5 April for the school holidays.
I wish you all a safe and relaxing break and look forward to seeing you in Term 2.
Cheers,
Elaine Hazim
Acting College Principal
