Grade 5

Grade 5 Report

Term 4 in Grade 5 promised to be and was, a very busy, exciting and eventful one for us all. Our Sovereign Hill Camp Costumed School experience was just sensational; our Grade 5 students adjusted to school life in the 1850’s beautifully. The girls learning embroidery, the boys learning scrimshaw skills, along with writing using ink and panning for gold in costume added to an unforgettable experience for our students. The annual Remembrance Day Ceremony was a credit to Miss Jamieson, the choir and our Grade 6 student leaders. All students had a fabulous time at the Kibra Colour Run; not to mention our ‘This Is Us’ Dance Production, Bike Education and our most recent Village Cinema excursion - ‘Wreck It Ralph 2’ was a lot of fun!

In Literacy sessions this term, we have undertaken a study of the novel ‘Number the Stars’ by Lois Lowry. The discussions, reflections and written pieces that resulted from this study have helped to continue to develop our students’ comprehension skills and ability to think laterally; all students thoroughly enjoyed listening to this story and making insightful connections too.

Our Term 4 Fractions and Decimals Workshops were very successful; students were able to consolidate, challenge and extend their understanding of these concepts through appropriately levelled activities. Throughout the latter part of this term, we have been revising number concepts. Students have worked through Escape Room and Amazing Race activities where they had to use their math skills to solve problems in teams; it was terrific to see their high level of interest and the fun they had completing each task.

The Grade 5 Market Day held on December 6th was a huge success! Our students worked incredibly hard to produce goods, advertise and then sell them to our Prep, Grade 1 and 2 classes; there were even extra sales on the Friday to our Grade 3 and 4 classes. Raising in excess of $1,600 for the Red Cross to help our farmers was a stunning effort; we were extremely grateful for the support of all who contributed to making this unit of work such a valuable learning experience for our students.

Through attending their Specialist classes in 2018, our students have had the benefit of learning so many skills that will continue to enhance and develop their learning; we are very grateful for the opportunities they have been given and the efforts of our Specialist teachers to provide such fantastic programs.

Our heartfelt thanks to you all for your support throughout the 2018 school year; it has been an incredible journey! We wish you all a very happy, safe and relaxing time over the holidays.
