Year 10 Retreat
During the last week of term 2, the Year 10s spent their time at the Araluen Lutheran Camp in Anglesea and the Driver Training Course in Bayswater.
During the camp, students had the opportunity to participate in a number of activities including horse riding, ocean kayaking, and an initiatives challenge. They were challenged to get out of their comfort zone with each of the activities, and they all responded positively to that challenge. Despite some initial reservations, all the boys had a go. They realised that trying something new isn’t as scary as they sometimes build it up to be. This was an important lesson as we prepare them for Year 11 and beyond.
The afternoon sessions were devoted to finalising their subject selections for next year. They spent hours reading through the VCE study designs to get a clearer picture of their subject options for next year. They were able to discuss their plans and ideas with their teachers, as well as being able to ask for advice and suggestions. During the evening, the boys participated in retreat sessions run by Mr Callanan and Joel Harris. As a group, they were encouraged to think about the decisions they had made in the past as well as the decisions they will be making about their future. They all responded well to the activities which contributed to a successful camp.
The driver education training session was run at the METEC facility in Bayswater. Here the boys spent some time in the classroom talking about the road rules and regulations as well as familiarising themselves with what it meant to drive a car. They had the opportunity to get behind the wheel and actually drive a car, under supervision and on a closed circuit, with a few of their classmates to share in the experience. Everyone commented on how great it was to be able to actually drive and get a little more experience behind the wheel. Despite a few bunny-hops and a couple of stalls, it proved to be a rewarding experience for all the young men.
We hope they will take advantage of the opportunities and experiences they’ve been given this year and they make a successful transition into Year 11. Whether it’s VCAL, VCE or TAFE, all of the young men have been given plenty of support and advice with their subject selections and the pathways available to them. I would like to thank the Year 10 teachers who have spent so much of their time this year offering guidance and advice to their students. I hope the young men will take on board the advice they’ve been given and will find success in their future pursuits.
