Snowy River School

Snowy River School for Student Leadership
Throughout Term 4, an exciting opportunity to attend the Snowy River School of Student Leadership was presented to Wantirna College. In Term 2, an application process was implemented to select applicants for the school. The successful applicants were:
Mackenzie, Lane, Zoe, Jack, Grace and Cheyton.
Based in Marlo, this school gave students an opportunity to develop their leadership ability, focusing on improved self-confidence, public speaking, practical leadership skills and overcoming personal challenges. They did not undertake the normal school curriculum for the 9 weeks, instead participants undertook differentiated classes with the aim of developing a community learning project (CLP).
While at the school, students spent a considerable amount of time acquainting themselves with nature through mountain hikes and expeditions, caving, kayaking, mountain biking and even learning to surf! With the term coming to an end, the students were required to present their CLP, which was to create a community garden.
Presenting this project to their peers and teaching staff, the Wantirna team performed their own version of ‘The Block’ with Lane and Cheyton hosting proceedings, and Zoe, Jack, Grace and Mackenzie playing an outstanding role as the contestants. This even involved rapping out their plan and using interpretive dance to explain how it was going to work.
Over the term, the students have all been a part of a valuable team within the school and have successfully enhanced their leadership skills and capabilities. Finishing up on Friday, we wish them all a safe drive home and look forward to seeing them back at Wantirna.
