On Monday, December the 10th, Year 10 students had their Formal at The Grand on Princes.
Our awards themed night saw guests arriving at the red carpet in gowns and suits. Guests were treated to a 3-course meal and photo booths to pull their glamour poses, all while shaking tail feathers to the upbeat dance music from DJ Lev. Preparation for the night was stressful for some as they had their beauty appointments and last minute haircuts to make, however all the worries of the world dissipated once they had the chance to strut down the red carpet.
“Formal was an amazing night and a great way to finish the year. My highlight of the night had to be when Ryan Jones was doing the Macarena and the DJ joined in! It was really good to see everyone having fun together and by the end of the night we were all dancing and finally letting loose after the long year – Shardia Calvert.”
Throughout the night, the committee presented several prestigious awards ranging from Best Dressed, Best Hair to Best Entrance. The winners gave impromptu speeches, many of which thanked their parents and friends for the privilege to be standing by the stage and to receive such prestigious awards.
“I’d like to thank my mum and friends for everything. I’d never thought I’d be standing here receiving this award today, but thank you for nominating me for this award, it is an honour, woooo! – Jazz Marshall – Best Entrance Winner”
One guest in particular stole the show with his electrifying dance moves. Dancing and moving at the speed of lightning, there was nothing but thunderous applause when he received his award. Despite being pitted against 15 other competitors, Kyal reigned supreme, and was voted the Dance Competition Winner.
As the night drew an end, guests sang their hearts out to the likes of “We are the Champions”, then hobbled around with their blistered feet to farewell their peers after a long year.
A very special thanks to the formal committee: (pictured) Sally Cheng, Jacob Lacchiana, Shaun Perkins, Teagan Kaye, Shardia Calvert, Sam Parker, (not pictured) Paige Spurrell, Leon Xu and Taylah Hocking for dedicating several hours of their time to prepare and plan for the night. These students had spent several lunchtimes, and time after school to coordinate the night. The formal wouldn’t have been half as amazing without the committee’s collaboration behind the scenes.
To the Year 10’s, thank you for a wonderful year. We know the year has been demanding: having to choose pathways, and finding the balance with part-time jobs and school, completing early start VCE, and having to face a whole range of other personal challenges.
We know that the year hasn’t been the easiest for some, and for others, has been a significant year in their lives. Though we believe that seeing you all get to the end and celebrate with each other has made the journey worthwhile. We hope that you all feel the same. Please take some time over the holidays to reflect how far you’ve come. Hopefully you’ll realise that you see the world differently to how you saw it 10 months ago.
You should all be incredibly proud of your achievements this year, and we hope that you continue to be the positive people that you are as the years go on. As we have said throughout the year, throughout every assembly, looking out for each other and being positive is what this cohort does best. Never underestimate the positive impact you can have on someone else.
Aim high and go in strong next year knowing that you can be your best self, and that you will always have teachers at Wantirna College by your side ready to support you with your goals.
We are proud of each and everyone one of you and wish you all a safe, restful break.
All the best,
Mr Jimmy La & Mr John Davison
