Sydney Dance Company visit

Jennifer Simkus

Teacher - Dance

Earlier this year classroom and co-curricular Dance students were treated to a visit from  two Sydney Dance Company members for a two-hour workshop focusing on the company’s latest production ab [intra].

The group of 35 students learned repertoire from the performance and, under the guidance of the company members, used choreographic techniques employed in developing ab [intra] to create their own manipulated versions of the work.

Visiting company members, Jacob and Cooper, were incredibly impressed with the positive relationships and teamwork displayed by attending students and applauded their creativity and focus throughout the workshop.

The following day, Year 9 Dance students attended a matinee performance of ab [intra] at The Arts Centre, which included a Q&A session with the company members. This was a fantastic opportunity for students to make connections between the performance and what they had been developing and learning in class throughout the semester.

I have not had much dance experience before, but I found myself at this workshop learning all these new techniques that I had never heard of or seen before.  It was a really good experience as we were given an insight into the industry,  learned some dance technique and generally had a really good time.

I really enjoyed the workshop because it gave me chance to learn a style of dance (contemporary) that I have never done before.  The choreography was unique and fun to learn which was a great experience.

Dance Life Unite

At the end of Term 2, BSC’s Dance CCP students took to the stage to compete at the Regional level in the Dance Life Unite Melbourne competition.

The students developed their jazz routine in their CCP lessons which have been running each Friday at lunchtime throughout this school year. For some students, this was their first time competing in dance, while others had never danced prior to this year.

All performers rose to the challenge, working incredibly hard to produce a polished, high energy routine for their audience, and walked away with an 84% and Highly Commended result. This result would qualify them to enter and compete in Nationals later in the year.

Students will continue to develop their performance work to present at the BSC Performing Arts Gala on August 29.

Please speak to Miss Simkus if you would like to join the Dance CCP or have any questions. All students are welcome.

My favourite part of the competition was the build up to it. I think our performance showed how much hard work we had all put into it.

Performing in dance Life Unite was very helpful to me as I had to learn new skills.  Leading up to the competition was stressful, but also a lot of fun as it united us. As a result, I think that our performance hade a great team vibe.
