CCP - BSC Makers

It has been an exciting time for the BSC Makers CCP which was introduced to the Cocurricular Program this year. It is an incredibly popular CCP and runs twice per week in order to ensure that all students have the opportunity to participate. As the year has progressed, BSC Makers has really hit its stride with students researching, investigating and inventing all manner of projects! In addition to working on their own projects, staff have initiated a number of incursions and excursions designed to engage, inspire and educate students.

There is really no limit as to what a student can investigate in the BSC Makers. Electronics, robotics, EEG Programming (recording brainwaves), 3D printing - these are just a few of the projects currently underway! It is a very exciting and innovative CCP, paving the way for students to pursue and share their passion for invention, science and technology. The space allows students to take their learning into real-world applications and to develop their skills in a creative, inspiring and supportive environment.

Dare to Drone

CASA-certified Drone Pilot, Chris Meneses, visited BSC to demonstrate the use of a drone to our students. Taking it through a series of aerial manouvers, Chris was able to educate students on the safe operation of the drone and to field the many and varied questions posed by students.

Chris also demonstrated how drones can gather telemetry flight data (real-time 3D image of the drones flight) and students could view live video feeds of the drone's camera. They were excited to see hands on examples of tri-rotor drone robotic movements and also had the chance to look at a 6-arm dual-rotor drone which is capable of speeds of over 100km/h and 10x gravity manouvers! Chris demonstrated, explained and discussed protoype fixed wing drones to students which helped them to understand how these drones are capable of vertical takeoff and other manoevres.

In BSC Makers, I use the time to design things for 3D printing and doing extra homework - like working on my Curious Minds Expo project, for which I am printing hooks.

MakeCreate - Brunswick

The BSC Makers were invited to visit Chris Menses and his colleagues at the local Brunswick makerspace.

Students were excited to see an established makerspace - and found that it was not at all unlike thier own - albeit bigger with lots more equipment!

The most important thing that the two groups have in common is without doubt CURIOUSITY. And rightly so - this trait is fundamental to a successful 'maker'. It is also quite contagious and can spread like wildfire - leading to invention, innovation and discovery!

I go to BSC Makers because I can enjoy using modern technology. I have leatned how ot use a plug-in to run a Wii remote from my laptop!

Makerspace is a great opportunity for people to gather and share common interests. Unlike past clubs, we have two lessons a week and have many resources to work with, like microbits. We even got the opportunity to visit the Make Create space to see what other makerspaces are like. Hopefully BSC Makers will continue and get even better in the future, especially when we move to the new F Block space.

One of my friends in makerspace taught me how to make physics animations using Blender [computer software]. I have also used the space to work on my Arduino Battle Bot.
