Catch the Buzz

The Junior Campus is hosting CATCH THE BUZZ!  Next Tuesday morning, students currently in grades Prep to Year Four will be joined by children from beyond the College to experience three action packed sessions hosted by our staff. Sessions reflect the passions of our teachers and range from Digital Design to Mysterious Messy Science, Awaken Your Senses, Poetry with Pizzazz, Scintillating Science and Crash Test Eggs.  Prep to Year 4 students are to wear their sports uniform for the day.

The Year Fives aren’t missing out – they attended a successful VIBE Festival at the Middle Years Centre and will participate in some exciting activities within their classroom on this day.

Year 3 Assembly

This week, the Year Threes performed Roald Dahl’s spoof poem ‘Cinderella’.  In addition, they researched Dahl’s life and acted out various vignettes from his life, for example that he worked in the shed at the bottom of his garden where it was dark and peaceful.  Another part of the Assembly was the recitation of Dorothea McKellar’s much loved poem ‘My Country’ – ‘I love a sunburnt country . . .’

We provide these Assembly plays with a number of goals in mind.  It is important to make poetry fun.  Play is one of the most efficient methods of learning.  Drama – plays – is a crucial form of education.  The students internalise a classic or funny poem and enjoy doing so, but the process is edifying.  They internalise the poems by learning them off by heart.  This has been going on for millenia but is sadly a dying art.  Wonderful performances by all students.

Prep Class Assembly

On Tuesday the 6th of September the Prep Class will be presenting at our Weekly Assembly. We hope that you are able to join us for this special event. It is their first formal presentation as a group and it is also a forum for public speaking. Assembly, which is held in the Refectory, commences at 10:20am and runs for approximately half an hour. Assembly is an opportunity to celebrate learning and to see what is happening in your child’s classroom.

Naplan

The Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority has delivered this year’s NAPLAN reports to school for distribution to families. These results inform teaching and learning programmes.

To help families understand the context of the NAPLAN information, and as an opportunity to view the papers that students sit, we will be hosting a NAPLAN Information Session for interested families next Tuesday 6th September in the Junior Campus Art Room from 5:30pm – 6:00pm. Please RSVP to Nat Povey (5571 1066) by 4pm Monday, to advise us if you will be attending this session.

Save the Date - Learmonth House Service

On Tuesday 13th September Learmonth House students will be leading the Junior Campus Service at the Uniting Church in Lonsdale Street. The service commences at 10.15am and runs for about 30 minutes.  Everyone is most welcome to join us.

Sunsmart - Start Searching for those Hats at Home!

Although we haven’t seen much sun of late, the UV levels are beginning to creep back up again.  In Victoria, the 1st September marks the beginning of the Sun Smart period so Junior Campus students will be asked to wear their sun hats at lunchtime. They will not be required to wear them at recess or to and from school until the UV index increases for the earlier and latter parts of the day.

Please ensure that your child’s sun hat is labelled with his or her own name (rather than the previous owner’s).
