Assistant Principal's Report

At this mid-point in Term 4 we are rapidly entering the examination and assessment phase of Semester 2, which provides an opportunity for students to showcase what they can do, and they have learned over the last six months.  Thus in Week 7 our Year 10 and Year 11 cohorts will undertake exams.  Please note that this Monday – November 18 – is the last day of classes for Year 10 and a Study Day for Year 11.  In Weeks 8 and 9 (part thereof), these year levels will attend an Early Commencement Program, which introduces students to their respective 2020 Year 11 and Year 12 Programs.  These sessions cover introductory core tasks and also allocate homework, thereby enabling students to begin next year with confidence and some clarity.  Next week our Year 9 students will embrace the challenges and opportunities of City Experience Week, with their exams scheduled for the second half of Week 9.

A key feature of our planning for 2020 is to invite Year 5 students from neighbouring primary schools to experience a day at secondary school.  On Wednesday we welcomed students from Streeton and Watsonia Primary Schools.  With our Year 8 Leadership Team acting as their informative and positive hosts, their itinerary included a tour of the school, introductory activities in the Arts, Food Technology, Humanities and STEM, and a BBQ.  Thank you to our teachers and students who ensured that our visitors enjoyed this event.

We wish to advise parents and members of our community living along or adjacent to Longmuir Street that we are taking recent concerns about rubbish seriously.  We are placing more bins in the yard on the Longmuir street side; we have requested that students be mindful of our neighbours and in particular of their disposal of litter; we are rostering students to participate in an after lunch yard clean-up.

We would also like to remind parents who have business with the school, or wish to contact a particular teacher, to please report to, and sign in at, the Administration Office located off Nepean Street.  In terms of organising a meeting with teachers or staff, it is preferable to make an appointment.  Given their schedules of work and duties, staff are not available for an impromptu meeting.  Nonetheless, we welcome all opportunities to meet with parents and to discuss student learning and student growth.

Lastly, some parents have enquired about when they can sell 2019 textbooks back to North of the Yarra – our school booksellers.  A representative of the latter has indicated that – for all year levels – the selling back process begins on November 25 and concludes December 25.  For more specific details parents can refer to the North of the Yarra website.  Please note that these sales are direct to the bookseller.  Greensborough College is not involved in these transactions and therefore books should not be deposited at the school for sale.
