Careers Hub

Last week in careers

Last Thursday during the careers elective we held our Startup Skills Workshop. Guest facilitators Edwina Kolamanski and Madeleine Grummet from Girledworld delivered an informative session for the students on Startup Skills, Entrepreneurship and the importance of having a growth mindset.

Edwina and Madeleine helped students gain a broader understanding of entrepreneurs, the different types of startups and broke down the stereotypes and misnomers. They also shared a lot of useful tips about some common tools and templates used by entrepreneurs in successful startups.

Using your degree - Career Connect Resource

Monash has this great resource on their website where you can find out about the different career options when you finish your degree. It is also a good resource to explore degree-related occupations, professional associations and job profiles, and it includes some excellent job fact sheets.

Simply click on the different links provided to find out more. These links also provide information about potential employers of students with the qualifications you have selected to explore. This list may be useful to explore potential work experience opportunities. For example, where could a Bachelor of Science (Chemistry) take you.

Putting the Art back into STEM (STEAM)

Paint Yourself a Brighter Future with Paint

Chemistry  Australian paint manufacturers turn over more than $2.5 billion worth of revenue every year – and the paint and coatings industry isn't going anywhere.

Did you know that the paint formulated for ships is specially designed to reduce friction and save up to 40% in fuel consumption? Find out more about the day in the life of a paint chemist here at Careers With STEM.

Four women in STEM who made history

In recognition of International Women's Day last Friday, it's worth celebrating that despite the social and cultural expectations of their time, these four women have powered through stereotypes to establish themselves as history-making women in STEM.

Makereti Papakura

Elizabeth Blackburn

Marie Maynard Daly

STEM skills are behind the future of work. From space travel, to climate change solutions, STEM careers and skill-sets are vital for tackling the big problems that face our world today and in the future. Careers that span a lifetime are becoming less likely, making way for today’s high school students to have as many as 17 different jobs over 5 careers in their lifetimes.

New admission models

In 2020 ANU will welcome the first cohort of students under a new national admissions process. The new admissions model will look beyond ATAR scores to consider a student’s all-round character and will be unique in its focus on holistic student assessment. ANU has created a step-by-step process guiding prospective students through the application process. All school-leavers will need to meet the co-curricular or service requirement. Students can check if they meet the requirement and view examples of supporting documentation on theANU website.
