Playworlds in the 6s & 7s

The 6s & 7s have had an exciting start to the term, welcoming 4 new members to the group.  Our Unit of Inquiry this term is ‘How the World Works’ and we are exploring this transdisciplinary theme through Playworlds.

The Playworlds' approach is a play-based model of teaching that engages young children to form concepts in STEM. The 6s & 7s are reading C.S. Lewis’ The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe and are currently building an emotional connection to the characters, including Lucy, Peter, Edmund and Susan and especially Mr Tumnus. These characters and their adventures form the basis for the shared imaginative space where we all play together, sometimes adopting the roles of our story book friends.  We have discovered that Mr Tumnus lives and is trapped in a world of eternal Winter. How can we solve the problem of a planet in eternal Winter? Is it possible? The children have shared some of their reflections:

Amelie - Playworlds was amazing because I got to imagine where I was. I liked that we had a fire and we pretended we were in a cave.  And we had real food.

Max - Playworlds helps me learn more about the story and helps me predict what is going to happen.

Lina - Playworlds is thinking in another world and not the normal world.

Rhea - I liked it because it was fun.

Freya - Playworlds helps you because when you go into the scene you are having fun and you are learning and you get to do it. I liked eating the food.

Seb - Playworlds is basically where you get to think about where you are and have fun.

Pema - I think Playworlds is good because you can imagine where you are and what you are doing and see what it is.

Noah - I like Playworlds because it is fun and you can learn at the same time.

Murray - I reckon Playworlds is fun because you can imagine things that aren't real,  like a cupboard has a mouth like a giant eyeball.

Eva - It was cool what we were doing

Erin - I think the cupboard was amazing because I imagined soft clothes. I had my eyes closed and I was imagining.

Elena - Playworlds is fun because you can imagine things that aren't real.

Annika - Playworlds is very fun because you can do anything you want and it is imaginative - you can travel anywhere you want in your play.  You don’t have to see anything real.

Lilla - I think Playworlds is fun because you get to imagine what you pretend you are in the world and you can go outside.

Pavlo - I like Playworlds because we get to be outside and we all jumped through the trees which was the wardrobe.

Olive - I like Playworlds  because you can think about what that person might look like and you can imagine.

Charles - I like Playworlds because of the fire.

Albert - I liked that you got to pretend that the little thin doorway was the door of the wardrobe.  When you went past it then we are were in Narnia and there was a green box that looked liked the lamp post.
