Football
Our young College Junior footballers have had an impressive start to their 2016 season. In the under 12s, the boys have shown great enthusiasm to learn the game, and every week their improvement has been evident on the field, showing they are capable of some very impressive passages of play. The under 14 boys have also showed great potential throughout their first 4 rounds. They currently sit 3rd on the ladder with 2 wins, 1 draw and 2 close losses. The boys have showed they are capable of being very competitive against any other team. Better players so far have been Jack Sharp, Lachie Craig, Charlie Johnston, Magnus Howells, Nick Gunn and Toby Vallance. The under 16s have also had a strong start to the year, sitting 2nd on the ladder with 3 wins and 2 losses, with one of these losses being only a 5 point loss to the team on top of the ladder. The under 16s have also been able to show that they are capable of matching it with any team. Standout performers so far include Oliver Hoskyns, Charlie Summers, Richie Johnston and Toby Hawthorne.
On the 16th of May, a team of Year 10, 11 and 12 boys competed in the Division 2 Herald Sun 1st 18’s Football competition. The boys had 3 wins and 1 loss on the day, and were lucky enough to end up winners of the competition by percentage. Congratulations to the team on their success. Better players on the day included Sean Barnes (best player medal), Campbell Watt, Jack Murray, Toby Hawthorne, Nic Lacey and Toby Brumley.

A reminder to all teams that due to Country Week, there are no Junior hockey matches on Saturday May 21st
Division 5
College Hurricanes went down to Coleraine 1-0. The team played very well, and scrambled hard in defence. Best for College were Skye Headlam, Sophie Merrin, and Chloe Headlam.
Division 4
College Rebels had a 7-3 win over Monivae. Goal scorers for College were Archie Cameron (3), Alice Dufty (2), Nick Hoskyns and Chloe Lyons. The team is playing quick, expansive hockey. It is great to see so many players contributing to a solid team effort.
College Crusaders went down 1-0 to Coleraine Maroon. The game ebbed and flowed, with terrific passages of play from both teams. Natalie Featherston played strongly on the left wing, with Bridget Delany working hard on the right wing. Olivia Allen again played a storming match at sweeper. Isabelle Musson was unlucky not to score of a well-taken short corner. Thanks to Sophie Merrin for assisting from the bench.
College Chiefs went down to top of the table Demons 1-0. Whilst on the wrong side of the scoresheet, the Chiefs really did put in a huge effort. Great games from Nina Pern, Charlotte Rowe and Toby Adamson. The team is playing structured hockey, and it is pleasing to see their commitment on the pitch, and at Wednesday trainings.

Division One Women
The College Thundersticks continued their excellent form defeating a depleted Monivae side 8-0. After coming off the bye last week and with many of the girls exhausted from dancing the night away at the Dinner Dance, this was always going to be a danger game. The coach really didn’t need to worry as this young side (and Mrs Nichols and Mrs Williams!) stepped into gear right from the start with our captain Emily Johnston scoring in the first 30 sec of the game. Emily scored three for the match and was probably best on field. Mrs Williams is in career best form also scored three wonderful goals and Hannah Russell, who can play anywhere, scored twice. Chloe Russell is proving to be a real star on the half line and alongside Phoebe Sweeney were named in the better players. A touch match against Coleraine looms next week with 5 of the Thundersticks unavailable due to Country Week commitments. We wish them every success.

Boys' Hockey
College Gold Under 16s played some impressive hockey against Monivae on Saturday and recorded a 3-2 victory. The winning margin was probably closer than control of play suggested and the boys must avoid ten minute lowerings of intensity as occurred this week. But for that period in the second half, when two goals were conceded, the boys enjoyed possession and were able to team together well.
Reagan Simons scored two goals and Dougal Sweeney the other. Oli Hoskyns, Lachlan Holcombe and Dougal Sweeney provided good mid field drive and, as usual, Reagan Simons worked hard to create openings and give drive. Lachie Armstrong continued his stellar form in defence and he was well supported by Taku Mahwendepi, Clancy Munro and Darcy Wall. Darcy was up forward late in the game and was charging goal-wards when the final whistle blew. He told me that, had the game gone for another few seconds, ....! Goalie Marcus Munro was alert and could not be held accountable for either goal whilst Jock Adamson, Charlie Rivett, Zac Cunningham and Harry Beal were well-positioned targets up forward. Dylan Cunningham began strongly but then had to sit out a large portion of the match when he mixed up his sports and tried to head the ball for a goal!
Gold played with much more control and much better team work than last week. Perhaps the return of coach Verco, who was away last weekend, made all the difference!
College Blue had the bye this week.
At Open level, the College team recorded a solid 5-0 victory over Monivae Cobras. Goal-scorers were Liam McMaugh (3), Josh Nichols and Tom Bunge. These three, along with Tom Verco, Will Allen and Nick Lacey controlled the midfield for much of the game. The boys played some excellent hockey and controlled most of the play, spreading the ball wide and using our run to advantage. Perhaps in the second half, we did not manage to create the same opportunities and became more centrally focussed. Maybe the previous night's dancing had caught up with our legs! Nonetheless, this was a very pleasing performance where we showed composure, skill and endeavour on a very cold night.
